Tiffany is not a great value if you are only talking about the stone, true. But there are other factors. I for one love the traditional Tiffany 6 point setting- others imitate it but the ones I have seen never look that good. The prongs of the Tiffany setting are perfectly shaped and very delicate looking, and they hold the diamond quite high- all of the Tiffany knockoff settings I have seen look kinda chunky in comparison.

And then there is the whole blue box thing- to some that is worth something. Really the only ones who can judge what is "worth it" are you and your fiancee-to-be.

Tiffany's is definitely overpriced but for some it's the difference between good and great. I spent Christmas Eve in their store last holiday season.

but honestly dude in my opinion.. if my man gave me his mom's ring.. that would mean more to me than all the Tiffany's rings in the world.. to me it is such an honor... go with ur mom's ring

sorta like someone buying a boxster vs a miata, both are convertible, both have 2 seats, both get you to the same place (minus a lot of other things) but one costs a lot more.

saw some 2 carats in tiffany & co in Hong Kong, they were reasonably priced compared to the rock my lameass brother bought for his slutty money hungry ex.

Like I told you last night. Knowing Maria, I beleive she'll appreciate the ring your dad left a lot more than any ring you buy anywhere. I think the sentimental value of it alone is worth a lot more. Do what I suggested about blessing it, and just give it to her. Later down the line you can buy her another ring for your first anniversary or what not.

I was pretty lucky. My grandma passed away a few years ago and my mom gave me her ring, it was a full 1 k, beautiful stone. I just took the stone and put it into a $1500 platnum setting.

I'd ask her what she'd like, assuming she knows it's coming. I got a very good idea of what my wife would like by visiting various stores. She really liked a $45,000 ring at Hamilton Jewelers in Princeton, but we didn't buy that one
When she got it, she was thrilled. Exactly what she wanted.
