Ever feel bad for how good you've got it?
^ i agree with your first part about the berkeley grad settling and waiting for something to happen to him, but with the JC dropout chick, she really hadn't planned or pursued to become a professional accountant (at least it seemed to me). she merely got hooked up by a friend. that is not called hard work. that may not be called luck either, but it is definitely not something that she had planned out and worked hard to make happen. in fact, what happed to this chick is basically what this berkeley grad was hoping would happen to him. some irony, huh?? go figure...

Back to my point on "positioning". She got the "hook up" because she became good at taxes. When the dude needed somebody to do the taxes for his company she was there with 6 years of good track record. If she had never bothered to learn the ropes do you think he would have hired her? Of course not! She did not "luck" into the job, sounds like she earned it to me!?!

99.9% of success is hard work and 0.1% is luck. Bill Gates did not just stumble into his billions.
I thought he was given something that people thought was useless, but wasn't??
maybe this is it? I just did a super quick search....
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
The GUI had its roots in the 1950s but was not developed until the 1970s when a group at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) developed the Alto, a GUI-based computer. The Alto was the size of a large desk, and Xerox believed it unmarketable. Jobs took a tour of PARC in 1979, and saw the future of personal computing in the Alto. Although much of the Interface of both the Lisa and the Mac was based (at least intellectually) heavily on the work done at PARC, and many of the engineers there later left to join Apple, much of the Mac OS was written before Job's visit to PARC. When Jobs accused Bill Gates of Microsoft of stealing the GUI from Apple and using it in Windows 1.0, Gates fired back:
No, Steve, I think its more like we both have a rich neighbor named Xerox, and you broke in to steal the TV set, and you found out I'd been there first, and you said. "Hey that's no fair! I wanted to steal the TV set!
The fact that both Apple and Microsoft had gotten the idea of the GUI from Xerox put a major dent in Apple's lawsuit against Microsoft over the GUI several years later. Although much of The Mac OS is original, it was similar enough to the old Alto GUI to make a "look and feel" suit against Microsoft dubious.

didn't bill gates get handed some pretty valuable technology from whereever it was that he was working (APPLE?)?

I think you guys have to see that you are both right to an extent(VTEC Junkie/Wantone and Trojan Horse) - it obviously seems that it was a combination of hard work - knowing what she was doing and putting in time and effort to get there, and being at the right place at the right time.
It is the whole 'nature vs. nurture' argument scientists have been going on about for years (about shaping personality/behaviour). I don't think it will ever be one or the other - most cases it will be a bit of both as VTEC Junkie was hinting at in his last thread.

I don't feel bad about my place in life. Some would consider me well off, some would consider me a pauper. What I feel is that I am fortunate, and I feel thankful.
As far as the toys go, I could strive for much more, and a nicer house and blah blah. They are just more trouble and worry. What I would like would be to maintain my standard of living and increase my freetime with true friends and family.
Nobody on their deathbed says I wish I would have worked harder for that Ferrari, but they do regret not spending enough time with those they care about.
My worthless $.02

She got hooked because she was good at the taxes right? If she sucked and screwed up everybodies taxes for the 6 years she had been doing them do you think her friend would have trusted the company taxes to her? If she messes them up I'm sure her friend will give her the boot. Sounds like working hard to me.

Man with PHD goes for a job interview. Crosses the street and gets nailed by car.
Homeless man with no education, witnesses the hit and run, and is awarded millions!
How is that one?

OK, a better analogy...
