Get a decent airsoft gun. Check out airsoftgi.com . Quiet, hurts, and it will not kill them.

I wouldn't hurt a house cat, but feral cats are horrible. I had a smillar problem turned out to be house cats. Talking to the neighbors fixed the issue, along with a new dog (local pound has lots of them that already have their shots and nuttered. Incase it didn't I had traps on standby. At my friends house he had actual ferals. Powderless 22's make less noise than a bb gun and might not seriously injure them (as long as you don't shoot them in the head.
