Default file transfer advice needed...

i was just wondering what are some of the methods to transfer files directly from one person to another over the internet. i know i can do it over AIM, but i've yet to figure out how to do it successfully. i also know it's possible to do it over P2P, such as Kazaa or Kazaa Lite, which i am considering to try, but have no idea what the transfer rate will be. to be more specific, i am trying to transfer some large video files from my brother. since the files will be several gigs in size, i'm particualarly looking for a method with the fastest transfer rate possible. anyone have any experience or suggestions as to how i should procede with this?? are there other file transfer programs out there that's more efficient than P2P?? also, are there any free FTPs out there where files can be uploaded to so that others can download off of it??

Several gigs? Wow.. that's going to take some time no matter what you use. I don't think there are any easy options to this one, probably using AIM or the Windows Messenger or some other instant messaing application is the simplest option but it's a lot of data to move over a link that can't resume downloads in the event of a fault.

P2P is only going to be an advantage if other people download the file from you via their P2P clients and then share the file out. I doubt that's going to happen unless they're files that other people want. Anyway, it's rather a hit and miss method to get a file from point A to point B.

For several gigs options like e-mail and putting the file up on one of the free Web site services is pretty much out.

If you can manage it, set up an FTP or Web server on one of your computers and get your brother to connect to it. Windows has Microsoft's Personal Web Server (PWS) available that you can use for this, but your network provider needs to be one that will let you host servers on your computer.

Failing all that, stick it on a DVD and post it .

You should see if you can get some free web hosting somewhere and FTP the files to there, then have your brother download them. That will save everyone bandwidth and time.

you could transfer it as a torrent. Im not sure exactly how to set it up as i have never made a torrent file, but i have downloaded them. Its kinda P2P, but it would probably be one of the fastest ways to get it done. I will look up the exact way to do it and post later.

You could set up a local FTP client, like ServU and get your friend to ftp them from you

If you are both using Windows & are connected to high speed internet use Microsoft NetMeeting. It has file transfer built in & its free.

Why not burn them onto cd or dvd and just send them through fedex or a different company?

Several gigs would take quite a while to do.

But if you want the easiest way, I would have to go with FTP. But it depends on how fast you can upload because usually it is not that fast since it's limited by your ISP. So it will still take you quite a long time.

VTEC_Junkie,

AIM is pretty painless, but won't always work if one person if behind a firewall.

As others have mentioned, you can also use free FTP software like Serv-U. Whoever has the files sets the other person up with an account.

Btw, I have a T1 FTP server that you can use temporarily if you'd like. The reason I say "temporarily" is because I only have a few GB of free space right now, so I'd need to remove the files as soon as you're done downloading them. PM me if you want to do that. It's T1, so the transfer rate is pretty good.
