filing small claims
I loaned my girlfriend's brother-in-law money, $1500 to be exact, and now has defaulted on the payment schedule we have contracted. Our signed contract states that he is to pay me $375 a month for four months until the loan is paid off. He made the first payment, but hasn't made another payment for two months.
Here's the problem. He lives in Alabama, and I live in California. I forwarded him the money. How can I go about filing an interstate claim? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Google around a bit with your county's name and small claims, or call the local bar association or the state bar (calbar.ca.gov). Most counties have a small claims telephone info deal or a website, so look for that first. Often you can get the forms sent to you or download them. Before you even file, just send a copy of the completed forms and let him know this is next; usually that's all it takes to get the ball rolling again. Good luck.
