Finally moved out and living by myself
Need more help and advice guys!
The nice apartment I thought was gonna get, well, the leasing company rejected my application because I'm Canadian and I don't have a visa to "legally" stay in the U.S.. Does that sound about right? I felt really frustrated because just 2 days ago, they said I was approved. It's a really nice apartment, great location, and for the past fwe days I had envisioned myself living there and everything was good; now my dream is shattered. All of a sudden I got their phone call saying since I don't have any work visa or any thing that allows me to live in the U.S., I can't get thqt apartment. Can't Canadians who come to the states for "pleasure visit" frequently enough decide that we simply want to rent an apartment here for vacation purposes?
They're also not going to return my application fee ($70). In my opinion, I feel that's B.S. If they can't accept my application because I'm Canadian and because I dont have a visa to stay in the U.S., that should've been the 1st thing they told me BEFORE I was applying for the apartment.
What do I do? Are Canadians not allowed to rent apartments in the U.S. if we don't have a valid (working or other) visa?
HELP!!!!

Get a visa or rent from a private party that doesn't care about your immigrant/visitor status. Your dream is only shattered if you allow it.
Application fees are generally non-refundable. You should have asked.
Out of curiousity, didn't you research all this before trying to rent an apartment??
Good luck.

Moving out at 22 years old isn't bad at all. I'm going to be 26 this summer and am currently living with my parents. I did move out for a few years to go to college, but moved back with them when I started grad school. I pay out the arse for grad school tuition and didn't want to take out a big loan, so I'll be staying at the parents' house until I graduate. I definitely prefer living on my own, but being able to crash with the parents is a great deal and saves a lot of money.
No real advice here. You'll get accustomed to things as you go along. If anything, I'd say to learn how to cook a few different meals. Otherwise, you'll end up eating fast food, fried foods, and eggs all the time like I did (and mac 'n cheese for those days when I was feeling like going gourmet)
Your palette and your sanity will thank you if you learn to cook a variety of meals.

Here's the follow-up on what happened:
I went to the leasing office and got my deposit back. So it's all good. My friend who lives there thinks they reversed my approval because I later told them that my friend referred me, which means they were going to have to pay him $350 (which we would've splitted). In that case the agents simply wanted to pocket in that money themselves.
Then yesterday morning, I went to this newly built apartment near Bellevue Square in Bellevue, WA. It's a great location too and I like the apartment very much. They didn't have any problem with me not having a work visa. We got all the paper work done the same day, and now it's certain that I'm moving in there
