more useless info...

a average house contains 5,000 spiders

remove all the spiders and the earth would be overrun by insects and rendered inhabitable in seven days

a daddy long legs is of the order Opiliones or Opilionida. They are normally refered to as harvestman and are not poisonous.

A couple creepy stories:

I was out riding my CBR600 (imagine that) and a wasp flew into the chin vent of my helmet and popped out inside my helmet. Yes the bike stops fast! Didn't get stung but I did bounce my nice helmet off of the pavement.

I was mountain biking last year during a real hot spell during the summer in Missouri. No one had used the trail in a while so quite a few spiders had put up webs in our way. I had this tangled mass of web on my handlebars and on my helmet and little orb spiders running over me and the bike for most of the afternoon.
Nothing bit me so after a while I kind of enjoyed watching them hang on to the bike for dear life.

I didn't get the urge to investigate, but I'm sure you have seen them. Brown with the small head and huge body. legs about 1.5 the body length. And yes it was a nightmare!
Best I can figure is I left my sunroof up in the vent posistion and one or more crawled in there and layed eggs. I didn't drive the car for a while, and then the madness ensued

Mindcore - that spider story sounds like a nightmare. Man, where the hell did they all come from. Do you know what kind of spiders they were???

Mindcore,
If it helps, I don't think there are any nasty spiders that far north.
The bad ones all live here in Missouri...in my shed

We were staying in a Ryokan (local hotel type place) by the coast in the summer and we had a spider in the bedroom.... I don't know what type, or whether it was poisonous, but it was a good 7" from leg-to-leg....

I asked a general question to my friends ... "is anyone not scared of spiders?" a couple of them came forward (one guy one girl) and came into the bedroom and turned round saying they were not going near THAT!!!

I ended up chasing it round the room with a bowl until I captured it. Then I didn't know what to do. We managed to get it in a towel and threw the spider and the towel out the window.....

I tell you though. It was the biggest f'ing spider I have ever seen!!!

I can't believe no one has mentioned dock spiders yet. Every year when I go to the cottage, I see them, the size of my hand, and they're not shy. I can't count how many times I've jumped out of the canoe or boat because of one of those things. But they walk on water...There's just no escape...

I've got to stop reading this thread!

we have some fairly healthy trantulas in the foothills nearby here in the bay area...however i saw a few ****ing HUGE critters just outside sydney,au.....the locals don't seem to mind.....what with all the snakes and such, whats a dinner plate sized spider or two?

BTW...several of the old cars i've bought,i've had delivered by flatbed in the driveway, opened the door and pitched a bug bomb or two inside and waited a couple of days before i even ventured inside....[in a closed car, they will take care of small rodents as well..]
