Industry Says Fuel Supplies Are Normal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The American Petroleum Institute, which represents the U.S. oil industry, sought to reassure the public on Tuesday that supplies of gasoline and other fuels would not be disrupted in the wake of the attacks on New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

But some officials at the state level and in the U.S. Congress expressed concern about reports of steep price hikes at the gasoline pump in the hours after the attacks.

``All information we have tells us that fuels are flowing normally to wholesale and retail markets throughout the United States. Our most recent data indicate that gasoline and diesel fuel inventories are adequate to meet demand. Refinery production remains strong,'' the API said in a brief statement.

Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore said in a statement his office ``has received numerous complaints that gasoline sellers and suppliers are immediately raising their prices on the gas they are selling.''

``Some instances of doubling and tripling of prices have been reported. This type (of) irresponsible and greedy behavior will not be tolerated. This gouging of our citizens in a time of national emergency will not go without redress.''

U.S. Rep. Ronnie Shows, a Mississippi Democrat, said his office also was fielding reports of gasoline price hikes in his congressional district or nearby.

``I cannot begin to fathom the reports I am hearing about possible price gouging,'' Shows said in a statement. ``If price gouging is going on, if there are those who would seek a quick material profit by playing on the emotions and concerns of the American people, then I assure everyone I will go after these people. I cannot imagine such callousness.''..........................

Yes, we are getting screwed in Norman. Have you been out yet Brandon? I went with my friend and although we got there early enough to get it for 1.48 or whatever, the salespeople were changing it up to $3. I've also heard of places charging up to $7. Apparently this is legal too in Oklahoma. Keating said earlier that they should stop but by law the gas stations can charge whatever they please. (Only in Oklahoma Emergency Alert they can't) I seriously don't think there's anything to worry about for now (atleast for most of the country). It would be atleast 3 days before any serious "taking away of gas" would take place.

my 2 cents

You guys should boycot those petrol stations after this is all over. This happened in some places in the UK when a petrol shortage was expected and a few of the stations that were gouging on prices have since closed down due to downturn in sales.

Vote with your feet, no-one should profit from this....

Huh...

Got gas at 6pm PT today and it was at normal prices, $2/gal. This is in the California Bay Area (Chevron in Redwood City).

All the reports of this I heard on the news were in the Midwest/Central areas. Missouri, Oklahoma, etc. I wonder why.

[START Ramblings]
You guys have it good for fuel prices, in Australia fuel at the moment cost about 85.9 Cents Per Litre, which going by 4.5461 Litre's per gallon means we're paying $4 a litre, which is ~US$2

and that is just standard fuel, not the premium stuff. i remember a while ago when Premium was over $1 Litre so 50 US Cents.....

Just thought i'd say compared to the rest of the world your fuel prices are pretty good, but all the Oil companies are rippin us off and the number one profitable company was an americal oil company which i cant remember at the moment.......

If I'm not mistaken, our local paper reported oil prices went up by 13% on Tuesday. I've also heard (unconfirmed) that gas prices in Oklahoma went from $2 to $8.

The reason this works for the gas station owners is that people are generally weak minded sheep (no offense - baaaa) but when I went to volleyball tonight there were lines 10-15 cars deep at the stations - and then on the way home too at Midnight! It's ridiculous. The news media (generally the culprit for this kind of thing) is actually on the air saying locally we have NO THREAT of running out and prices should absolutely NOT go up. As UL stated in another thread go on with your daily life, don't accelerate things and add to the panic!! For everyone who hears this and goes out to get gas "just in case" your only adding to the problem and allowing these profiteering bastards to rape everyone. Geez - what the hell is one tank going to do for you anyway?!?

I don't have to worry about gas prices because my parents own a gas station in Hinesville !!! To my knowledge, they haven't raised the prices yet; They are still at $1.28/1.38/1.48 right now. Maybe if I convince my parents to raise the prices, they'll get enough profit to buy me an S2000 !!!
