Get a GOOD 7.1 reciever (Denon) and a set of Klipsch speakers...the REAL ones. You might only be able to get the two fronts at first, but those two fronts with a good sub will rip your hair out. Add the other 3 when you can afford it. Do it right the first time.

Yamaha, Sony, Pioneer, all of them are about the same because they compete with each other to drive about the same standard loads. However, rarely ever will any of those amps have the current to drive speakers better. Try the NAD or the Jolida before you try anything else.

I'll tell you I'm talking about real high-end audio, not what you can find at Best Buy on the sly.
for a budget of $1000, why are we talking about high end audio?
it seems pretty apparent that that OP isnt an audiophile and isnt going to spend the money on it.
my buddy just bought an Onkyo HTIB and it sounds great in his HT with the same approx dimensions of yours. Does it compare to my 5 figure setup? actually yes, it doesnt win, but with audyssey setup, it is very enjoyable.
go with a mid level receiver (onkyo 506 or 606 level) for ~$2-300, spend ~$200 or less on cables from monoprice, then read some reviews on the 2 brands i linked. the electronics will change every few years, but good speakers will last decades.
P.S> in a sub-$700 receiver, you wont really notice much difference in sound. that is a fact.
