for a budget of $1000, why are we talking about high end audio?

it seems pretty apparent that that OP isnt an audiophile and isnt going to spend the money on it.
Jolida 1301 + Usher S-520s + Oppo 981 = $1000, throw in cables, and you might see $1200 or so. . .

Beginning of the (hi-) end.

You need to re-read the OP.

Jolida 1301? Really? a stereo tube integrated amp? with no video, let alone no HDMI.

this is for a home theater, not a stereo listening room.

OP already has DVD/BD capability in his PS3, so no need for Oppo.

No offense, but this is the worst suggestion on this thread yet based on the original requirements.

Stubbornness clouds the intention of this thread, that is, to find an under $1k HD compatible (read HDMI) system.

The answer was given early, to get an Onkyo 601/701 receiver with a nice set of speakers. Or get one of their HTIBs that have this receiver as its base and save for nice speakers down the road. A THX certified HTIB has got to have decent sound for the average end user (non audiophile).

So yesterday I went out to visit my friend who works at Futureshop and he got me his staff price on a nice setup, I think. We went with the Harmon Kardon AVR254 set up to Polk Audio Home Theatre Speaker System (RM6750). I set it up as soon as I got home and it sounds great. My parents have a system set up at their place with Polks that's over 10 years old and I really the way it sounds still. The HK receiver has one of those EZmic setup type programs which is really cool and was a snap to setup the sound with. Overall, including wires, speaker stands and a power bar it came out to $1028 CDN including tax, not bad for a regularly $1800 system.

So anyways, what is a better way to run audio from my PS3 to the receiver, HDMI or Optical TOSLink?

Thanks again for all your help guys!

for your PS3, HDMI is preferred as you will get the internal decoding of HD audio and the convenience of 1 cable.

Toslink will only get you regular DD or DTS.

8D. there is no point in responding to you further. feel free to pitch whatever you want, but don't be a typical snooty "audiophile" and force an older stereo solution when a digital surround system is asked for and responded to.

and your response post qualifies for second worst post of the thread.
Unless you are also posting as Baby_Lexx, this is not your thread.

HDMI, IMHO.

So why the hell did you spend half the post space emphatically stating how you weren't going to respond?

This will help you with any issues you have with your AVR and PS3

unfortunately, it seems the x54 line has HDMI handshake issues.

dont feel bad, my 606 does as well. HDMI is a 2/3rds solution right now.
the next gen will be better, and then the next after that will be even better, etc.

enjoy, and NEVER look back at what you could have had. Home theater is an experience to be enjoyed. In the end, it is what you think is the best, not what others think.
