well i'm having congee (rice soup). the swelling has made my face a little weird - one side is puffier than the other.

should i use listerine to swish in my mouth?

i've stopped taking the vicodin and instead taking advil because the vicodin makes me sleepy (i'd rather be posting and browsing the net or playing games), should i not do that?

thanks for all the advice
ICE

Dilute the listerine with some water. You should've gotten a syringe to force water into the hole from your dentist/surgeon to flush the hole out.

If you're in pain then yes. I'm not a doctor nor should you ever take medication advice from someone you don't know over the internet but doctors often perscribe 800mg of ibuprophen (advil) at one time 3 times a day with some soft bread and water (lessons rare stomach impact). However vicodin will solve your problem. Call your doctor on the ibuprophen to verify if its safe for you.

Taking vicodin which is nothing more that a refined opiate combined with atcetometiphen is a great pain releaver (actually it doesn't stop the pain only alters your perception of it) while ibuprophen is a NSAID non-steroidal anti-inflamitory drug and is good to prevent and lesson inflamation which often is the cause of pain. You should not mix these two. While transistioning between them you should allow one to wear off completely 4 - 6 hours at least (consult a doctor)then take the other (to be safe) basically i wouldn't listen to this at all i would pop the vicodin and stay on it until I didn't have anything less. Use some ice every now and then.

the holes seem to be, um, sutured shut, not sure if i want to "force" anything in there

but the bleeding has gotten a lot less, and the ibuprofen seems to work out well - i'm not really hurting at all. took the antibiotics this morning per instructions, and now i'm waiting to see if the pain comes back.

i should just keep the vicodin for another day

Rich, this is funny you're asking a bunch of sports car nuts medical questions (not that the answers are wrong). Why don't you call the dentist's office?
Had mine pulled years ago, while awake. Not too much pain. My really painful experience was in boot camp years ago. I had a root canal, sat for three sessions of drilling. I never got a shot of novacaine, no gas, no nuthin. It was very painful! Especially when he hit the nerve over and over again.
If you wonder why I didn't complain, you've never been in the military.
Boot camp--me private-- him captain.

You need to make certain you keep the sockets evacuated (foreign materials rinsed out) until they are healed. Typically you receive what looks like a large syringe you fill with water (or salt water) and squirt into the sockets.

My wisdom teeth were the worst thing to ever happen to me. I had all 4 (impacted) removed last year. Unfortunately, the surgeon severed a nerve in my jaw, so I have no feeling in the lower left side of my face. I'm numb in my chin, teeth, and gums. It sucks. I've had to go see specialists to assess the damage, and almost had a second surgery to try to fix the nerve (50-50 chance of working, 25% chance of making things worse). Decided against the 2nd surgery.

Anyway, one wisdom tooth was butted against a molar, causing a cavity beneath my gumline. So, 6 weeks ago I had to have a "crown lengthening" surgery, where the oral surgeon cuts away enough gum to expose the cavity. It took about a month to heal. Just this morning I went in to have the cavity filled, which took about an hour (the longest I've ever been under the drill).

I sure hope that this was the last of the wisdom teeth side effects/after effects. I still have no feeling in my face, and occasionally drool (usually while on 1st dates).

Bottom line - WISDOM TEETH SUCK

Make sure you rinse a lot, and keep icing the swelling. Eat lots of pudding. Get well soon.

Don't force anything in there Rich. The holes WILL usually be sutured shut as you said. The objective is for the hole to heal and eventually dissapear so that your gum line returns to normal.

I had to do lots of rinsing, minimal or no smoking and take care with foods that are liable to get trapped in the hole until it starts to heal properly. Apparently smoking is one thing that can also help cause dry sockets.

WAIT! If you are sutured, by NO means should you swish anything in your mouth. That can cause your stitches to come undone (not fun). The whole syringe thing is if you didn't have to get your gums sutured.

Your dentist should have given you a list of do's and dont's. Do introduce warm salinated water into your mouth and let it dribble out of your mouth. Do NOT force any water into or out of the mouth.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled when I was 15- didn't hurt at all.

they put me to sleep, I woke up with a bloody mouth.

Went home and iced it. Lived off advil. I didn't even take one vikoden.

Try biting down (gently) on a tea bag. That may help you stop the bleeding. I believe the tannins in the tea leaves will help to constrict the blood vessels, which stops the bleeding.
