which GPS unit??
I'm have some upcoming hikes and am looking for an economical GPS unit that does a good job with PC interface, vehicle speed (for the ride there) and mapping -- oh, compact is a big plus -
-- there's TONs of units out there --

I own a Garmin Vista. It is a great little unit and it is compact though a little bit pricey. You get great battery life and tons of map memory. Mine holds all of Ventura/LA county plus the roads to Vegas.
Other benefits are altimeter and electronic compass. Several other models exist that are cheaper, have fewer functions, less map memory but have the same form factor.
I got a dash mount for it, and I mounted mine on the dash to the left of the steering wheel.
Magellan also has some compact GPS units about the same size, though I haven't used them.
