I would give props to Cosby though, it is harder to make a broad audience laugh and still do a family show.
Speaking of family shows, I saw Dice in college and there was a small mob of protesters out front because of his gay schtick and the paper said he recieved a couple death threats. It was metal detectors for the crowd before the show, and he had two HUGE gorilla body guards stand on either corner of the stage the whole show and watch the crowd. I don't know if you ever saw a guy who hung with him he called Hot Tub Johnny, that was one of em. He looked to be about 450 pounds of guido.

I nominate Charlie Chaplin. He was inventing comedy as he went along. He did it without language. He did it without crudeness. Everyone could relate to it. He could make people laugh or cry. And everyone who came after him studied him. Not bad for a pioneer.
