GUNS!
I own:
CZ 82 (technically a Vz. 82) chambered in 9 x 18 Makarov
Walther P-22 w/5' barrel
One tip I can give is get out to gun shows ASAP.
Get your mitts on every gun there, spend time at the shows and talk to people. You will learn some good stuff and gain knowledge. Best of all you will see what fits your hand and what feels right, buying a handgun is a lot like buying a good chef knife: if it doesn't fit your hand with reasonable comfort DON'T BUY IT.
I bought my CZ because it was C&R status (curio & relic), had a cool history behind it, was not expensive, and I loved the size and fitment of it for CCW.
A word of caution: Guns are infectious and you may see yourself wanting many, many more. I myself have been lusting over a classic CZ-75 9mm black polycoat with a S&W .357 revolver to follow.
A .22 is not a bad way to start and you can definitely get more practice in for less of a hit to the wallet. If you want to go that route a cheap plinker (250+) such as a Beretta Neo is really fun and easy to shoot.

Considering the STG 44-45 is straight up illegal since it would be a war trophy.
Not many were brought back from WWII. And even few were registered.
Only states that allow a full auto permit will let you have one. (legally)
Good luck finding brass in 7.92 kurtz. (short 8mm.)
Seen only a few in gun shows in Reno, and Las Vegas. (they were not for sale)
That is the first of the modern type assualt rifles.

For the range and target shooting I'm with the people who mentioned 22's. You can pick up 550 rounds at Wal Mart for under $10. That's cheap to shoot. Beats 50 rounds of 9mm, 38, 357, 40, or 45 for $12 or $13 anyday. If you're going to the range often a 22 will pay for itself in short order.
Fitting that I clicked on this thread and saw an ad banner for this site: http://www.frontsight.com/landingpg-1.asp
