You can actually tame them and teach them stuff.

All you have to do is handle them a lot when they are young so they find out who the "master" is or in other words "who feeds them".

I used to have 10+ hamsters. I would stick my hand in the cage and all of them would run up to my hand and just wait on my palm till I brought them out. Kinda cool.

Just be careful if you bring them home because if they are not used to the evironment, they get sick. Called the wet tail disease. I had a hamster die from it. It's curable and all it takes is a good eye and anitbiotics. If their excrement is wet and is all over their butt, they are infected with the bacteria which resides in the intestines.

Watch out for that.

Other than that, they are very cool pets.

Honestly, if you DO get one and put it into one of them ball things, I wonder of your cat will show any long-term interest. Or will this just be another 3-day cat toy effect.

damn, for real? what about those huge cage things? like the ones with all those tunnels and crap? i think those look so badass. too bad i dont have room for it but i would imagine a hamster would love to have one of those things.

NONONOO!!!

I had a set of those tubes that almost span the length of 10 feet, up, down, in length.

It went up, sideways, down, you name it. It was fun to watch the little guys play in the tubes for hours, getting stuck at dead ends, going around in circles, etc.

Buuut....i realized...they do their bathroom duties in the tubes!! After a week or so, i smelt something funny. Turns out the urine mixed in with the poo and made this thick gunk that seeped through the air holes and dropped down into the carpet.

Not a happy sight for me and my roommate. Plus, cleaning those tubes is a pain because you gotta take apart EACH and EVERY tube to get it clean.

If you want more hamster stories, ask.

THEY ALWAYS USE THE DAMN WHEEL.

It gets annoying at night when it's PITCH BLACK and you're trying to get some rest before the midterm the next morning. You hear a soft but still loud *squeak*squeak* in the background. Sometimes I stick a pen through the wheel to anchor it. But usually I let them play since they are so damn cute.

If you are going to have just one hamster, you don't need a cage THAT big. I don't recommend a glass cage because hamsters like to climb walls and hang from the ceilings. I had a wire cage before the tubing and it was just fine. You can stick ur finger through the cage and they nibble on your finger. But get a wire cage. Make sure to get the right bedding too. I recommend the bedding that comes from shredded egg cartons. I forgot the name of the brand but that absorbs the odor a lot better and it is really soft. Most of my hamsters loved corn and sunflower seeds so I purchased bags of food that had a lot of corn and sunflower seeds in them. But to start off, just get a bag of random assortments and see what he/she likes.

I can't stress playing with your hamster enough. You need to handle your hamster a lot for him/her to get used to you and her living environment or else you're going to have a pretty crappy relationship with your hamster. I don't know how young your hamster is going to be but it is best to get a hamster when it is really young so your hamster can get used to you a lot quicker. THe older they get, the harder it is to tame them.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions.
