Handguns?

Don't buy more gun then you need, since your inexperienced with a handgun I would recommend a used 380 auto or a 9 mm, maybe a 38 revolver for ease of use as a starter gun. You didn't state your intended use, so when you check out guns check a variety of revolvers and auto's. Don't get hung up on the caliber, become a decent shot first and foremost.
Seek out advice from a recognized gun dealer, he will help you make a wise choice on your first handgun.

where are you going climbing that a gun would be necessary?
It is probably like people buying "home defense" guns or whatnot, the chance that you would ever have to use it is .000001 percent. For what its worth (flame suit on) I dont agree with the recent 5-4 supreme court decision on the washington dc handgun case, but since I can have one, what the hell.

what is the main purpose ofthe weapon?
Concealed carry
Home Defence
target shooter
all three of these IMHO would denote three extremely different weapons if someone were to ask me about which is best for which application.
When buying weapons I am not concerned with price as much as quality, balance, materials, caliber etc etc

Keep the politics out or it goes to that forum.
-i have a sig 9mm automatic. i bought it new because it was small and low maintenance (stainless) but 4sure expensive. at the time i lived in the mountains and i guess i needed it. avoid buying a cheap weapon, in in hind site avoid buying a weapon altogether if you can. THIS NEEDS TO BE STATED.
-its important that the weapon be bought legally and used that way too but these days i am concerned who knows what so buy the gun at a local gun show. if you are concerned about price do the research and buy it cash at a show. if you buy now this might be your last chance before tighter laws... buy quality. if you ever get to use it in your long life it will only bring bad.
-good luck.
