Mk II!! I have a Government bull barrel model myself. Feeds just about anything that doesn't mis-fire (try new magazines first if you have any feed trouble)! I modified the guts and grip with Volquartsen parts and with decent ammo is defintely more accurate than I am! Only about as heavy as a Desert Eagle...

Easy there boss. There are 4 supreme court justices that disagree with you.
But the other five do, that is all that counts...

Back to topic, if you are planning to carry the gun, I would suggest looking at a compact or a subcompact depending how big your hands are.

List some of the posters before me have suggested, go to different shops to hold the one you like to see how they feel in your hand and maybe they will let you try it out if they have a indoor range.

I wouldn't go to a .45ACP for your first gun, i'd stick to a 9mm or a .40S&W. The .40S&W round is a great middle of the road round for protection as it provides enough stopping power when needed and won't over penetrate your intended target.

There are so many choices of firearms out there, so take your time. You could just buy one of these:

Well, you aren't getting a 1911 for under $400 new. You could have problems getting one in good to excellent condition for that price used too, unless you buy a Taurus, which I wouldn't.

Personally I would just get a polymer frame .45 ACP. Springfield XD line is my favorite. They sit better in my hand than a glock, HK, etc, and I prefer the feel when firing. XD will run you abour $510-560 new depending on barrel length (4 or 5"). A Glock 21, 4.6" barrel, will run about $550-600. So clearly, a fine used example of either should be readily available at under $400. HKs run significantly more.

None of these are particularly small guns, but they could be concealed inside your waistband, or under your arm. They are also good range guns (comfortable to fire), and should be very reliable for when you get attacked by a bear or rogue climber with a bloody pick axe. So, get to a range and test drive a few..

XD, 4"

I have the 5" length and I'm very happy with the pistol. I use Ranger SXT's for home and Winchester white box at the range.
