Default Hardware gurus please help! CD Rewriter problems on Win98SE

I am running win98 SE on an ancient PII266 with 64MB RAM.

I recently installed a spare 24/10/40 speed CDRW drive. i jumpered the CDRW drive to master and the existing CD drive to slave and both are on Secondary IDE. The HD is master on primary IDE.

There are no device drivers for this drive but win98 detected it and it worked fine with a variety of CD burning utililties. I burned a CD without any problems. The following day I switched the computer on but none of my CD burning software could find the CDRW drive. Funny thing is it comes up in device manager, my computer and i can read from CD's placed in the drive.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

You may have to go into device manager and uninstall it. You should be able to download the driver from the internet, then when it installs or when you update the driver, give it the downloadedone.

Are both OS'es Win98SE?

What ^ said. I had the same issue a couple of months ago. I ran windows update, installed the new drivers and it started working. The CDRW drive on my machine is set for slave mode.

Have tried running the CDrom as master and CDRW as slave without any luck.

I have looked under the manufacturers page for device drivers but there arent any it says none are needed. Afterall the drive worked fully when first installed.

So why did it work for a day and then stopped working in the CD burning software. i have tried several burning packages with no luck. But the drive still reads fine from my computer?!?
