Have you ever picked up a hitchhiker?
I recently got back from visiting my parents in California and on the trip down to CA and on the trip back I saw a total of 3 hitchhikers. I was wondering if anybody out there has ever picked one up. I did once when I was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii about 6 years ago. A friend of mine and I were driving around the island and picked up a girl who was supposed to meet her friends at Sunset Beach on the North Shore. It was a brief trip about 10 minutes or so, just long enough for a little chit chat. All I remember was that her name was Kerry and she was from Southern California somewhere. I normally wouldn't have picked a hitchhiker but I was with a friend, it was noon time, and she didn't appear to be a threat. So like the thread title asks, have you ever picked up a hitchhiker?
I used to hitchhike, back in the 70's all over the US. I even took my dog with me, usually got picked up by women, they trusted me because I had a dog with me. Some of the ladies even took me home with them, for dinner and other things.
During those times I also picked up hitchhikers whenever I had a car. Sometimes just for the fun of the ride I'd take them where they were going to see the town, or city. Ahh the life of not having a schedule or agenda.
Now though with the way things are I wouldn't think of hitchhiking or unfortunately picking them up.

Old man, you sound like me. Back in the 70's you could go a long way with a thumb and a dime bag! I feel guilty now passing hitchhikers but the times they have a changed..
I actually wonder how people could stop and pick us up back when long hair and faded ripped clothes were the norm? Just more trusting back then?

I only wish I could live it like what OLDMAN wrote, that would be so sweet...
I did pick up a stranger, not a hitch hiker, he was a security guard at my friend's apartment complex who needed a ride since he didn't want to ride his bike 5 miles. Other than that, never had the time to pick up the very few I've seen.

I picked up a couple in my time, actually they weren't technically hitchhikers, but people with car trouble. I'd take them to the closest gas station or phone. I remember once a girl asked me and my roommate for a ride home from a bar. That girl was brave. She was about 110 lbs and got in a car with 2 complete strange guys. It actually made me mad inside because I felt like he and I looked 'safe' (which we were), but I wanted to be dangerous
When I lived in Antigua it was the norm for people with cars to pick up hitchers. I'd pick up teeny tykes and take them to school.
In the US now days I don't think it's very safe. I feel sorry for some of the people, but I'd rather put them on a bus going where they are going than risk the life of me and my family/friends.
