Have you ever picked up a hitchhiker?

I've picked up three hitchhikers.

One was a guy just trying to get to the next small town up the road. I was in college at the time, and he seemed harmless enough. I even offered him a little bit of cash to get some food because I found out he was between jobs but he refused and thanked me kindly for the ride.

The other two were two young girls-- probably 14 or so-- who were trying to hitch a ride back to their house about two miles up the road. I was stopped at an intersection and was worried that if I didn't pick them up, they might get picked up by a bad person. I couldn't believe how friggin naive they were!

so anyway, on the ride towards their house I gave them a serious but not condescending short lecture about how big a risk they're taking getting in a car with a totally strange guy. I told them I could have gun, I could be a rapist... the usual stuff. Then I took them to just the street into their neighborhood and had them walk the rest of the way because they also shouldn't be showing strangers where they lived. (and I didn't want to have to deal with any parents who would be wondering who the f*ck is this stranger dropping off their young daughter and her friend )

Ever since then I've never picked up a hitchhiker and probably never will.

i have taken lots of people to get gas or to their work if their car is broken....some guys, some girls.... mostly decent looking folks..... i am a sucker for someone in distress.....probably 10 people total in the last 5 years....

i remember one lady and her son....he was about 5 years old..... they were pretty leary of accepting a ride from me......... she probably thought I was going to be a wierdo.... i drove them to their house........."no ass, no gas"... joking....

I have only picked up one real hitchhiker... guy about 30ish.... he seemed ok.... kind of dirty.... that was probably 5 years ago though......

Most "hitchhikers" look very dirty and smelly.... no go... plus I would never pick up anyone if my kids are with me just in case something goes wrong.

Yeah, and you pick one up without them along and something goes wrong and they no longer have a daddy.

I haven't picked one up since the 70's.

A little OT, but my mom had a her car stuck in a ditch after sliding on ice. A teen and his girlfriend stopped and stayed with my mom in their warm car until help came.

It's rare, but there are still some good people out there.

I drove a guy from KC to Denver last week. Good guy, a bit smelly.

It is a sad fact that you never know who/what you are going to pick up these days -- thus the chambered glock 23 under my left leg...
