$500 for HD-DVD? Heck for $200 you will be able to buy Microsoft's HD-DVD add-on for the XBox 360 before Xmas... assuming you already own a 360, like me!
.. assuming..

I would wait for one of the dual format players.. plays HD-DVD and Blu Ray, so no need to worry! Probably priced at a modest $1500 too

Don't forget. All of this HD-DVD and Blu Ray deal won't even matter if you don't have the TV and cables to match. The TV needs to play 1080p to fully utilize all new techs coming out, including the PS3. You'll need a TV that has more than one HDMI socket so you can attach more peripherals in the future. If the TV has 1080p and HDMI sockets, then it'll most likely also have an integrated ATSC tuner to watch TV in HD without having to get an outside box to clutter your set up.

This is a good TV choice.

I think integrated tuners are a kind of waste.

Progamming on my DVD player ups the signal to 1080i. While it may not be true 1080i, I bet most people wont be able to tell the difference unless the film was shot with HD cameras. It seems when they transfer standard film to digital, some resolution is lost.

Well 720p itself is already much better than 480p.

And you dont need more than 1 HDMI input. 2X1 and 4X1 HDMI switches are available and relatively inexpensive.

The bigger thing is actually the HDMI 1.3 standard.

So i was an early adopter of HD, and only have component inputs. While it works fine with HD cable boxes(1080i) and dvd (480p), but i was wondering if, with the new inception of upconverting DVD players, none of which i know of currently upconverts over component, will the new HD-DVD/blu-ray boxes upconvert 480p and also show the HD content over the component or will it downconvert it all to 480p?

Dave
1080p will only work with HDMI connections. Don't waste your money until you have a new TV with HDMI inputs. My DVD player won't even upconvert unless I have the HDMI hooked up.

Does anyone know why HDMI only carries stereo sound and not even 5.1? I think a cable that retails for over $100 should be the only one I need.

PS3 in 14 days baby!!!(maybe)

well thats not true. the problem is getting the display to scale (or not the scale) the source correctly, or getting a display which can accept the signal through other connections. There is nothing special about 1080p.. its just a high resolution. Tru most TVs cannot accept 1080p through anything but HDMI, but this is not the case for 'monitors'

^The issue is not sending the signal. The issue is copyright protection electronic nannies that won't send a 1080p signal until the source confirms the receiver (TV) is not a recorder of some sort.
