well there are ways around that

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT? My 43" TV from 2001 is just fine and dandy. I guess it's considered "semi-obsolete" now, but it's still super clear.

I was too lazy to read everyone's post, but I just wanted to state my opinion...

The best advice is wait. I read an article a few months ago which listed issues with both blu-ray and hd-dvd. As things stand, hd-dvd has the current edge because I've heard the blu-ray equipment is clunky, has poor picture due to using an inferior encoding (mpeg2?), and is a pain to upgrade the firmware. The inferior encoding is temporarily due to software problems and supposedly will be fixed (or has been fixed).

I personally think I am going to get a ps3 at some point, but I'm hesitant to do so because I remember when the ps2 came out, many of the earlier units had overheating issues, etc. Plus, the current ps2 doesn't even play all dvds, so I'm worried that the new ps3 may suffer from the same problems (at least the early models)

Also waiting will give time to find out who the technology winners are. Hopefully in a year or so, one standard will be gone and everyone can have one player.

[QUOTE=CBR2200,Nov 4 2006, 06:35 AM]Does anyone know why HDMI only carries stereo sound and not even 5.1?

Don't forget. All of this HD-DVD and Blu Ray deal won't even matter if you don't have the TV and cables to match. The TV needs to play 1080p to fully utilize all new techs coming out, including the PS3. You'll need a TV that has more than one HDMI socket so you can attach more peripherals in the future. If the TV has 1080p and HDMI sockets, then it'll most likely also have an integrated ATSC tuner to watch TV in HD without having to get an outside box to clutter your set up.

This is a good TV choice.

Too bad that TV does not run 1080p native.

...yeah it does. You mean with component cables? The new high end cable is switching from component to HDMI, what do you mean by native? You need HDMI to run 1080p.

This TV only has a native resolution of 1,366x768. In order to see true 1080i or p, an LCD must have a minimum of 1,920x1080 pixels. Anything less than this and you are playing a conversion game.

1080P Native is existing in LCD on the Sony, Mitsubishi and Samsung models as far as I know.
