Just wondering what everyone's opinion was on these two types of connections. I just got my hdtv on monday and got my new cable box today and the guy used their crappy component cables. I've read lots of different opinions on this and was just wondering what everyone thinks before I go out and buy this stuff.
Your best bet is to use DVI/HDMI.

Here is a good article about the differences but it was written by a high-end component cable maker.

So, which is better, DVI or component? HDMI or component? The answer--unsatisfying, perhaps, but true--is that it depends. It depends upon your source and display devices, and there's no good way, in principle, to say in advance whether the digital or the analog connection will render a better picture. You may even find, say, that your DVD player looks better through its DVI or HDMI output, while your satellite or cable box looks better through its component output, on the same display. In this case, there's no real substitute for simply plugging it in and giving it a try both ways.

HDMI DOES give better video versus component FYI. PLus it frees up your digital inputs for other components.
No -- it does in fact not look any better or worse. And yes, you can get shitty cables for cheap. Good HDMI's are still way out there.

Good article on the subject:

FWIW I do my comparisons on our KV34XBR2 tube HD set. This is the same set when properly setup that almost all folks use as the baseline for HD comparison.

thanks for the info--definitely a big help. I dont think I'm going to go with the hdmi. Based on what I've read its probably not worth the money and will just buy some decent component cables.

I disagree. HDMI is by far the better choice for HD hookup. And no, you don't need to spend mega $$$ for a simple cable. A cable is a cable is a cable. Please don't tell me you fall for those special gold tipped oxygen infused Monster cables that sell for $200.

I'm too lazy to quote sites, but just go to AVSforums and educate yourself. It's been discussed their ad nauseum

Yeah it has -- and here is the good bit -- most folks agree with me. **** I own the reference TV for virtualy every review and have tried both -- I choose to run component for a reason.

You want to waste money on HDMI? Cool with me. Less money for mods though.

Are you selling those rose colored glasses you're wearing? I'm not sure what you're reading there at AVS. So let's just say you like component, while most other professionals and audio/video-philes go with HDMI for it's obvious benefits.

I'm not sure why you think inexpensive HDMI cables are a bad choice, but hey, if it weren't for people like you, MOnster Cable would be out of business.

I'll continue to use my Walmart purchased HDMI cable with my tuner/dvd player and enjoy the superior PQ. To my eyes and many, many others, HDMI is the superior choice.

No. This is even more pronounced in longer runs where clipping occurs.

? Who said anything about that cheap shit?

Again, yours perhaps but I would wager 100 bucks you have not done back to back. The experts never agree on anything but you will find very few who pick HDMI over Component at this point. No need really.

Did you try asking your cable company for the hdmi cables? Might be worth a call.
