I went last year. We didn't get a rental car. We signed up for one of the timeshare presentations, and they gave us a limo from the airport to our hotel (but not for the return trip). They provided free breakfast the 2nd day we were there, a small bottle of tequila, plus gave us a bunch of free activities. I guess it was worth it for 2-3 hours of our time. We cabbed it most of the time into town, but our hotel was close (Villa del Palmar). We were a short walk down the beach from The Office.
Pretty fun, but I was surprised by how cold the water was, how strong the currents were, and how harsh/grainy the sand was. We didn't really spend much time in the ocean/sea. Most of the time we were by the hotel pool or out doing activities.
I was there last year. Car rentals is not cheap. I rented a car for the 5 days I stayed there and probably used it twice driving to Costco. Finding a parking space is not easy at downtown.
Most of the resorts have rental car onsite where you can rent the car for the day. It is a little expensive - a tiny Chevrolet Chevy (yes the model name was Chevy) was $55/day including tax.
It's a beautiful place. My family is there quite often at the Villa. Make sure you specify the vehicle type you want. They told me i'd receive a VW, and I assumed that meant a Jetta/Bora etc. Well, that wasn't the case. I ended up with a Wrangler by the end of the week, and thought it was the perfect vehicle for that climate.
