Default Help me prepare a 15 minute lesson plan

I'm interviewing for a faculty position at the University of Phoenix. It's something I've always been interested in doing (teaching), and now I have a chance during my interview process. One component requires that I put together a lesson plan and teach it within 15 minutes. Since I'm shooting for marketing classes, I'm going to put together something related to marketing.

Any ideas I can build off of?

our marketing departement can spend $ better than anyone I know. They wait until the last second, then overnight a skid of shit to some show and it "only" costs about $3k. Why send it out a week early and pay $200???

Can you build on that?

Last Fall I had to do something similar for an interview at UCI; in my case, I needed a 20-minute presentation on risk management.

I settled on the basics: What is Risk? What is Risk Management? What are Risk Mitigation and Contingency Planning?

It went over perfectly: on Monday I'll be talking with a gentleman at UCI about conducting some in-house training, which will likely lead to more consulting work for me.

This is a long-winded way of getting to the point: make your presentation simple. I'd suggest something like "The ABCs of Marketing (Consulting Services): Assess the Situation, Build a Potential Client Base, Contact Potential Clients.

(This idea comes from Marketing Your Consulting Services by Elaine Biech, Wiley & Sons, 2003.)

Are they asking for a marketing proposal or a Lesson plan for a class?

If it's a lesson plan for a class what I would suggest is to think back on the classes you have experience. Ideally one of the core class that a marketing major would be expected to take. From that point develop a fairly detailed syllabus for the class and from that extract a lesson plan for a single class or topic. Organize that topic to fit a class period and teach that topic to your audience. Treat them like students not faculty, during this exercise.

I would expect that most marketing professors have not taken much if any course work which is pedagogically oriented. Requesting something like this of future professors seems like a good idea.

Of course I cannot help with marketing content but if you would like me to review the structure of the lesson plan for application to a college level classroom I'm happy to help.

Well, it's always surprising to me how marketing professionals (the ones I've worked with or competitors worked with) forget the basic marketing fundamental: the FIVE Ps.

Product
Place
People
Price
Promotion

I guess I will use a simple product and go from there.

Thanks everyone!
