well unfortunately even compensating him doesn't address the larger problem of the riaa. The kid didn't create a network, he didn't create any network shares. He created a usefull tool to search an existing network for whatever matched the query string. The fact that he can be sued for that and loses his life savings indicates a larger problem ... I mean anybody with windows can mount a network share and use windows to search for files, and some operating system provided the network share in the first place ... should they sue MS too? after ms makes a profit off their software.
Best of luck to him, it's too bad he lived in the US I guess, sorry for the ranting.

 

that is sooo bullshiet. u cant sue some 1 for making soemthign then some 1 abuse it for illegal stuff. i dont see the riaa go out n arrest people who borrow their friend's cd n make copies of it.
