I would ask who takes care of the street, like snow plowing and general maintenance

Once my cousin and his friend that lived next door to me came up with the bright idea of spray painting the side door of the fence leading to my back yard. Next day, a notice from the HOA came telling us to fix it. I spent my Saturday morning sanding it away.

Also, next door neighbors decided to drain excess water from their backyard to the front. All the water flooded part of their front yard. My family got a fine for damaging the grass.

I sure do love HOAs.

Can't you just ignore these "tickets"? Unless they pursue in court, who cares?

I think they can even go so far as to foreclose on the home, depending on how the deed restrictions are written. And I believe that many HOAs maintain a warchest specifically to pursue legal action, as that's how they enforce their rules. Meaning the likelyhood of ending up in court is very high.

Foreclosure is a serious last resort though. If you have a foreclosure, it can lower the rest of the complex's value. . .
