Seriously though - in our 2nd house - we moved to an area that was still somewhat "questionable" I kept a loaded .40 Walther P99 in the nightstand - I found myself waking more often than not to "imaginary" noises and wandering about the house with the thing than necessary - it was sheer paranoia.

except I'd say: dog, alarm, firearm, and then a company like Action Bio-care to come clean the blood and bits and pieces off my floor.
I've got a standing deal with ServiceMaster just in case

"Motion censors"? So they stand around and count things that move?
90% of alarm system deterrence is the little sign in the front yard. Casual thieves will see the sign and go to the next house down the street with no sign, and determined thieves will know how to defeat the alarm and will break in anyway.
If all you want to do is deter theft the best thing to do is buy some ADT signs on eBay or have someone with an alarm system give you some yard signs and window stickers. Only get an alarm if you are worried about protection while you are home, but for that, you could have a gun.
If the house you are buying has an alarm system, call and get some free signs sent, and then cancel the service. Signs with the pad on the wall will do a good job fooling anyone who peaks in.
