I got the interview for the job I have now from knowing someone and then impressed them enough in the interview to land the job.

Try my approach.

Stay in school forever and trick them into paying you to do it!

Always have a small sample portfolio with you...seriously. I've gotten a couple offers because I walk around with a pocket sized sketchbook, and within the sketchbook I have couple mini-prints of my stuff....

You never know who your going to run into. A perfect example was my friend. He was at Kinko's making photocopies of his school assigments (entertainment design stuff), it just so happened that someone from ILM (industrial light and magic) was there getting some copies done too....he saw this kids stuff, gave him his busnss card, and now he's designing spaceships for the star wars movies...

Another oppurtunity is get a laptop, go to a cafe/bookstore and start working there. Its all about being "discovered" out of context (not in an interviewers environment). This way the person reviewing you will be more relaxed, at ease and not concerned about business etiqute and stuff.....

man that's awesome. california definately has the edge on things like that with those companies being out there. I'm just not so sure some of my work is up to par for that kinda stuff. granted im only out of school for 6 months but sometimes i feel the creativity is not as strong as it should be or im not as motivated as i should be. then again its hard to produce great work when you have to please people who like things that look like crap so naturally you produce crap to suit them.

I got sick and tired of not knowing the right people to get me in the door, so I just said F_CK it and started my own business.

In getting a job these days I believe it's not what you know, but who you know.
