Default how do average or blue collar afford vacations?

I just went to Ocean City, MD for a week with my family....not fancy at all....but still fairly expensive...

I lived there in 1990-1991 so I still have a fairly cheap place to stay (1 block back on 9th street, 2 nice bedrooms, central air, kitchen, etc... for $950 for the week).

anyway...... everything is a ripoff or scam.

Temporary "HENNA" tattoos...$25.00 per person (seemed like about 90% of the girls 12 and older had them)

Basketball throw to win a super cheap but big stuffed animal - $5 for 3 throws (you have almost no chance of winning ever. We watched 3 stupid people spend $15.00 each in a matter of about 3 minutes..none won).

Crappy dinner for 6 (4 adults and 2 kids) $70.00 at "TONY's Pizza Deck" ( 2 adult spageghetti's, 1 large pizza, 1 salad and a pitcher of lemonaid).

Boardwalk tram thing (we walked).... $2.50 per person....apparently $1.00 x 100 people per trip wasn't enough $$$$????

Go carts (we didn't ride them due to owning one previously, but...)...... $6.00 for 3 minutes..... so a family of 4 would spend $24.00 to battle each other for a whopping 3 minutes.

I would guess the average family would spend $2500 to go to f'ing Ocean City, Maryland....they would need to save $200.00 per month to be able to make that trip to get ripped off on just about everything!

don't they get it though? I guess there is some "pressure" from the family that once you are there they want the full experience, but jeez.

I have the $ but won't spend it....

Thrashers - $8.50 tub of french fries
Dip-n-dots - $6.50 for about 10 mouthfulls of frozen sugar balls
Fudge - $12.50 per pound

shoot the star out with the unaim-able bb machine gun - $2.00 for 10 seconds.

Scott, if they're unionized blue-collar workers, they probably make more money than you and I. My guess is the elevator operators on a union job, making $40+/hr, have no trouble going on vacations.

Just one more reason why I decided NOT to have kids.

as an example....NON-union......the guys at our warehouse after working for 20 years now make about $30k a year......in our hot stinky factory they make about $35-$40k (some make more due to OT)....

So they save all year to go get completely ripped off for just about everything at the beach.

i went to a seashell / souvenir type place at the inlet on the boardwalk.... almost every single souvenir was "made in china" including things with shells and sand....ahhaha.... great souvenir!!

they weren't cheap either.

unions interesting topic..so unions are shrinking in the U.S. yes? and companies are losing $$ and competiveness because of some unions I believe. The power of unions today though is a far cry from the past such as the 60s it seems like. Did some research on the steal side Unions for my MBA class last year.

i haven't heard much good stuff about unions. Our employees get treated pretty decent. would hate to have a union in our place. would probably pay an extra $1.-$2. per hour but that would get eaten in Union dues, so the employees would be no better off, but our company would struggle to make $ at that point.

I think a lot of times the union leaders don't see the big picture that if they push too hard there won't be a company any more. I am sure a union would be a good thing though if the employees were getting shit on, but that probably doesn't happen that much in america any more.
