For me being self-aware is really important. There are different things that make me happy at different times. I do a fair amount of writing and every once in awhile I make a list of things I'm grateful for that day. It could be something like getting a new car or a loved one making it home safely or it could be something as simple as hearing the sound of my cat purring.

As far as coping with problems, it depends on the situation. I personally choose to use support of loved ones (and professionals when the need arises), self-care and journalling.

I think my happiness is maintained by hope and also by the people I choose to keep in my life. As long as I am making choices that enrich my life, happiness is likely to result.
happiness eminates from your soul....you're either happy (always), or you're not (always).

you can't look to others to make you feel better about a situation...at least that's my phil.

Hmm you got me thinking what exactly it means for me to be "happy" and the connection to my soul...I can't buy the idea that my soul is essentially always happy or always unhappy. For example, I've had some significant stresses in my life over the last year or so, including the death of someone I worked with. Part of my soul was connected to that person and as a result I couldn't feel contentment with that loss. But that doesn't mean I wasn't content about other aspects of my life.

I agree that you can't rely on others to make you feel better about a situation, but their presence does make a difference for me personally. It's a combination of support and personal work that helps me through the difficult times.

i think what i was getting at was that people (everyone, me included) have ups and downs in their lives....it's how you face those that determine whether you're an eternally happy or unhappy soul.

my mom was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago. was i sad? you bet....

did i dwell on it? hell, no (maybe a day? two?).

i was like, "ok pal, clear your head, get a good night's sleep and let's tackle this thing head-on....she still has a long life in front of her....let's work at fixing this".

that's a lot different than dwelling and moping and being unhappy about the cards you're dealt.

my dad and brother were more pragmatic than me, and i think my positivity helped our situation - and ultimately the outcome (she's cancer free as of now).

you can have short-term "challenges" that test your resolve, but your overall demeanour (happy/unhappy), i maintain, is instilled in your "being".

well... it's february, so i'm at about 6 / 10 right now. which is good for me considering what time of the year it is. i'm normally a really really happy person but i have seasonal affective disorder. so EVERY YEAR, i get really sheisty from about Dec. - March. a couple years ago was the worst and i spent 4 days in the psychiatric ward in March. this year has been a much less dramatic season for me. i take lots o' melatonin, i was taking lexapro but i stopped cause it made me feel like a zombie, i take lunesta for nights i can't sleep, and i have this light box that i'm supposed to sit next to at my desk at work (i don't think it works and i feel like a freak.) OH! and i have my s2000!!! best light/mood therapy EVER. i told my psych that too.

this year i taught myself ways to put worries out of my mind, or to constantly reassure myself that everything will work out. the lunesta helps a lot, cause it knocks me out at night and i don't stay up obsessing over every little worry in my life like i did before. other than that, i have my boyfriend (who can be just as much a source of stress as he is a source of stress relief, but whatever), i ALWAYS have my family, my cat (Apple) who is the most kick ass cat in the world, lots of friends i can drink my troubles away with and get into crazy shit with on the weekends, my car, and the best therapy of all: RETAIL THERAPY. i buy things and spoil myself whenever i'm sad. whether it's going out to a nice restaurant with my girlfriends and ordering / eating whatever the fawk i want, or buying a pair of kick ass high heels, more make-up, sunglasses, whatever.

-you look to your car for happiness
-you require drugs for various life situations
-you have a pyschiatrist (i don't even have a doctor - he died 10 years ago)
-you look to eating/drinking to make you happy
-you rely on others for happiness
-your worries (whatever they may be) preoccupy you

do you see? happiness is a function of cause and effect for you....you're only happy when you're not sad, or you have to create happiness.
