"Thank you, but no thank you... have a good day." and hang up. Quick, polite, effective.

Ok, I must chime in here. I am not officially a "telemarketer" but I do work in a call center. I ONLY call people who have called me first.

1. If you are rude, I will be rude back and call you until you either sue me or buy something from me. I, like most of my co-workers, am relentless.

2. If you are polite, I will be polite back, but I will keep calling. I will make up "sales" to have a reason to call you back.

3. If you do not want me to call you, DO NOT CALL ME FIRST ASKING FOR YOUR FREE CATALOG!

4. If you sound like you have no money, no credit or no job, I will never call you again. This is the best way to avoid getting follow up calls.

5. Don't ever think that if you call a company asking for a catalog or answering an ad for a free offer that they don't get your telephone number unless you give it to them. Your caller ID does not work with telemarketing companies. I get EVERY telephone number that calls in to me regardless of caller ID block. They will call you back and since you called them first, you are fair game.

Here in Indiana, there is a state wide no call list. I am on it. The only telemarketing call I have had since the beginning of January is the Indianapolis Star newspaper. They will not ever call me again.

I wish it were that easy. Every company that I have asked to be taken off their call list kept calling until I put myself on the "do not call list".

I waste their time by listening to their whole sales pitch first and then hang up. A couple months ago we kept getting calls from a window salesman once a week. I don't think the landlords would appreciate us changing out the already brand new windows. The last time they called my roomate told them that we boarded up all the windows because we were practicing to be vampires. The salesman then said "you could have just said I am not interested" and my roomate says "you could've just not called here". They have never called again.

Practicing to be vampires.

That's priceless.

I'll just make up a ridiculous response.
