Default How do you sell your spot on a waiting list?

I was just wondering how people sell their spots on waiting lists for cars. Say you have a $1000 deposit on a car and you are #1 in line and you sell your spot on ebay for $5000, do you just call the dealership and tell them to transfer it over to the high bidder's name? Also, do they just pay you $5000, or do they have to pay for the $1000 deposit, too? I have always been a little confused about this. Thanks.

It depends on the details of the auction. It can be either way depending on the auction's working if the deposit money has to be refunded. Otherwise most likely it'd just be that the person who has the waiting spot simply tells the dealer that they held the spot for whoever and they come in and buy it. Simple as that.

Well, not sure on how it is at the dealership but if you sell it on e-bay, they pay you the $5k (or whatever it goes for) and you give them your ticket that you got. I think you get a ticket when you go on a list. If you put $1000 down and then you make $4000 off the list

If you sell the spot, can you get the dealership to send you back the deposit money instead of subtracting it from the purchase price (if that is what they normally do with a refundable deposit).

Well they might send it back after the car is sold and the monies are paid for the car.

It seems though that that would be taking it too far. The next persons on the list should actually have a shot if you get your money back despite the car still being sold.

so is the $1000 then subtracted from the price of the car, or is that just a $1000 profit for the dealership?

I think most dealers would not let this happen..... but if they did, I would imagine that they would just swap names and you (the seller) would recieve your pay from the private party (buyer).

I had thought about that back when I had my name down for 2 S2000's in mid 1999...... what a dick move... i simply got my $500 back from Dealer 1 and bought from Dealer 2. Hindsight, I could have actually purchased both cars and then sold the other S2000 for about $4-$5k markup at the auction.

The guy who was #2 where I bought my original S2000 took his to the auction about a week after buying it and got $39k..... not bad.
