In my experience, if you attempt to handle simple things like tickets and court appearances without a lawyer, they smell blood (or money), and come out looking for everthing they can get. If you hire a lawyer, the problem mysteriously evaporates, and you can usually get away with ajudication (I think that is the term) and if you keep your nose clean, you have no record, which pays your attorney fees with the money saved on insurance. Even if you don't keep your nose clean, just about any lawyer can again get you a deal where you have no record if you again promise to never do it again. I don't know how far this goes, but a little money to a lawyer will easily pay for itself. In the future, I am hiring a lawyer for each and every ticket I get, no matter how minor.

By actually going to court, I learned something else. If you are lucky enough to require an interpreter, and lie your ass off about how much money you make, you can usually get the charges dismissed. No, I am not bitter, just astounded that a kid from Somalia can be arrested for running three stop signs and evading arrest and only get a small fine and court costs and an admonition to never do it again, simply by wearing a really nice suit and keeping his mouth shut, with a court appointed attorney and translator.

Things vary greatly from State to State and in jurisdictions. There are counties in some States where hiring an attorney will always get a ticket reduced to a parking ticket. This too may change now that States are trying to not raise taxes by raising ticket revenues. Michigan is adding up to an additional 2 grand surplus onto speeding tickets, if it passes the legislature.

Maybe I need to try a different and even simpler approach to getting this message out.

If you get a radar or laser based ticket under dark conditions, the ticket does not meet legal requirments that the officer first visually estimate your speed before using the speed measuring device. If you fight this and it goes to trial, he will have to testify to being able to see in the dark. This is the greatest weakness in speed enforcement in the U.S. We can beat all these tickets. I'm trying to find ways to spread this information.

My best friend is an attorney here in Orlando and he gets his friends and clients off the hook all day long, apparently he and a few attorneys here in town know some loopholes that seem to work, he hasnt told me much information about them but he promises me if I ever get a speeding ticket he will get me out of it - this leads me to believe that there is good information out there it's just a matter of doing the research and knowing the law - most people don't fight it and pay up!
