How long does it take
I love Dr Pepper but it is super sweet. Too sweet for my liking so I end up with Diet.
There are some pretty cool wine chillers out there, and I actually wouldn't mind finding a quick chill device. With a little bit of gentle motion to move the liquid in the can, if it's surrounded by icy water or cold temps it can chill in less than a almost. Rafting down the river on the weekend I held my warm bottle of water in the chilly river and in about 30 seconds it was like the thing had been in the fridge all day.

diet dr pepper at least doesn't leave the sensation my teeth are going to rot from the sugar

If you "prefer" the taste of Diet Dr. Pepper, cool.
the heat transfer function depends on delta temperature and the conduction coefficient.
the freezer is fine but air is a poor conductor. I suggest you put the can in a bath of ice water. should be cold in 10 minutes.
to increase the delta temp, you can also use liquid nitrogen but use a face mask as boiling N2 can splash and cause injury.

If you roll a can on ice the heat transfer increses ie. the surface area of the can will transfer heat to the ice.
I don't know how to say that in nerd speak:
S2020, where are you?
Less than a minute if you use:
http://www.squidoo.com/CooperCooler
This device just places the can in a bath of ice cubes and water and rotates it, thus improving the rate of heat transfer to the soda/beer.
It really works.
