Wait. Now I don't know either. I think he meant the water...?

He didn't say anything about keeping the soda in liquid form, he simply gave instructions on how to quickly get a can of soda colder than 32F. (The freezing point on non-diet sodas is slightly below that, by the way, because of the sugar.) And he's entirely correct - the salt will allow the water to be below 32F without freezing, and all that < 32F water will chill the soda cans very quickly.

I put a soda in the work fridge two days ago so it would be cold in the morning when I got here.

I came to work, went to the fridge and my soda was GONE.

If you've ever stolen something out of the work fridge I hope you die in a fire. That's about the lamest thing you could do short of kicking me in the nuts. Even that wouldn't be so bad since my gf has them.

You know what I did? I bought a little peltier fridge from Target - it's just big enough to hold a six pack. Got it sitting under my desk.

You can even buy a single-can fridge that's powered off your computer's USB port!

Oh stop arguing with me and go eat your frozen soda.

Point taken though, using salt you can chill things more quickly as well as chill that liquid in which you dissolve the salt to have a lower freezing point than it has without the salt. Problem is, it'll likely taste like shit when you drink it because you can't exactly wash the salt off of a liquid like you would from a piece of food that you've salted.

This thread took a weird direction, I'm going to watch Neil and the new kid duke it out in the Anger Management thread.

You don't put salt in the Coke, you put it in the water that the Coke's in. Just wipe the mouth...or pour it in a glass.
