Funny you should ask because I just sent in my application for the first time and got it in one month.

I think it is really key to have the form completely filled out, have accurate information, and and I sent in my original birth certificate. (they send it back)

I got a letter in two weeks saying they had my ap, and two weeks later, the passport arrived. I paid the standard fee and NO expidited fee.

There are companies out there who will get it for you immediately. That's what I did last month to have mine renewed. Took less than a week. I'm just a procrastinator and didn't want to chance any problems with my booked and fully paid for trip to Anguilla. If you're interested, I can dig up the name of the outfit I used...

on the passport application, it asks when I plan to go out of the country. But Im not going anywhere soon, but just want to get a passport in case I do go somewhere. I can still get a passport even though Im not goin anywhere yet right?

The backlog is much better now than it was last year. The Post Office should quote you 4-6 weeks for standard processing. I paid for expedited processing and got mine in 3 weeks with no hassles.
