Cheaper than an apartment. I have 2100 sq ft 4 bdr 2.5 bath, two 24x24 garages, on 3 acres. Taxes are $660 a month. Equity is a nice thing to have too.

Depends where you live. My parents house is over $2000/month for jus taxes (8 bedroom 4.5 bath 2 car garage on 1.25 acre). My apartment if i bought it would at least be $1200ish per month. Equity is overrated. It's money that isn't working for you

It's nice to live "payment free" but that doesn't exist. Between property tax and HOA (in some areas) it doesn't make sense to buy.
When i was looking for apartments in Florida (Fort Lauderdale) tax + HOA was alone around $700/month. If you have a mortgage at least another $500-$1000. The same apartment could be rented for $900/month. Sorry but i don't see the point in buying.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. If you buy a house, you will end up getting a ton of deductions and credits on your income taxes that more than make up for it... On top of that, with the crappy economy and tons of people's credit is in the toilet, buying a house can sometimes be less per month than renting.

Like i said it depends on the area. In NY it doesn't make sense to buy most of the time. Buying is more of a luxury than a smart financial decision.

Buying vs. renting is like buying vs. leasing with cars. It really depends on the situation, tax bracket; etc.

For ME the deductions for the interest on my mortgage and property taxes on my yearly taxes does NOT make up for the interest that im paying on the mortgage. The interest alone kills any "savings" you have. Trust me ive sat down with my accountant and financial advisors and in NY it didn't make sense for me to buy my apartment or a house.

Yeah I know thats one of the reasons I took the place lol I work in sales and when I first moved their in 2008 I was making about $30k more a year than I am now so its not as easy as it used to be but seems that nothing is anymore lol The building sucks cause its old n elevators break down often but my place was completely gutted out before I moved in so its fairly new.. I love it but my wallet doesnt as much especially now that I spend so much on modifying my s2k lol

Well most elevators in NYC suck anyway. Most residential buildings use the cheapest companies they can find for maintenance and repair. In my building 1 out of 2 elevators is almost always down.

But for that price you couldn't live almost anywhere that is that big and close to the city. So it's def a gr8 deal. Im just not looking forward to when i lose my subsidized housing in summer 2013. I wanted to move to chelsea since it's very close to work but a 1 bedroom is almost $4000/month

When I was growing up Edgewater was just a dump with nothing around it besides a hospital and now its the place to be in hudson county..Everytime I go to NY to pick up my GF I say to myself I prefer to look at NY from my balcony than live in it..
I wouldn't go that far I couldn't ever consider NJ just b.c i fly too much out of JFK and my parents house/my cars are in LI. + most of my friends and family live on LI.

I prefer the view from my old apartment in Long Island City. I lived on center blvd. right on the water.
LIC used to be a dump but condos/rentals are being built pretty quickly since there is such high demand.
