Cheaper than an apartment. I have 2100 sq ft 4 bdr 2.5 bath, two 24x24 garages, on 3 acres. Taxes are $660 a month. Equity is a nice thing to have too.
Depends where you live. My parents house is over $2000/month for jus taxes (8 bedroom 4.5 bath 2 car garage on 1.25 acre). My apartment if i bought it would at least be $1200ish per month. Equity is overrated. It's money that isn't working for you

It's nice to live "payment free" but that doesn't exist. Between property tax and HOA (in some areas) it doesn't make sense to buy.
When i was looking for apartments in Florida (Fort Lauderdale) tax + HOA was alone around $700/month. If you have a mortgage at least another $500-$1000. The same apartment could be rented for $900/month. Sorry but i don't see the point in buying.
Like you said...depends on where you live. I could rent my house for 3x what the property taxes are.

$861, 1 bedroom/bath, walking distance to downtown Austin. Rent is exploding down here; our metro area is 2nd only to San Francisco (not sure how NYC isn't above us). Before I went back to grad school I lived downtown and had a 1600 sq 2/2 condo i rented for $1900/m. Same unit goes for $2800 2 years later.
