Default Human Resources Ques: What searches are done?

Anyone here from Human Resources?

Question: What searches does Human Resources do on a person before they hire them? I had a very unflattering article published about me with my full name blasted all over the place. Should I start taking legal action on the paper or should I not be worried when looking for my next job?

The article doesn't come up in google when I search for my name. It's a small local town paper, not a major news outlet. Am I safe?

Edit: No, I won't post any links.

if it doesn't come up on google i'd say you're probably safe

but no single person on s2ki is going to be able to answer this question. HR at different companies will do different levels of background checking.

Nobody's going to find it. Even companies that specialize in background checks for employers wouldn't find this, and wouldn't do anything with it if they did.

No company will do a formal background check without your consent.

Informal is usually myspace, facebook, and google and obviously anyone can do that.

The important question to ask is, is the article true? If it's not, then I would sue the bejesus out of them for defamation of character, libel, etc. And have the article taken down.

If it's factual/true, then it's the right of the media to report it.

I think you're going to have to post a link to this article.

It depends on the position. If you're applying for janitor they won't check too far, but if you're going to be their CFO they'll probably get pretty thorough.
