Hypothetical ticket
A lawyer will always help - just the fact that you bring a lawyer into it will generally help you considerably.
The cop took your license but denies having it? I'd get a lawyer REALLY quickly. Then again, 50 over the limit may warrant stripping you of your license.
Regardless, yes, get a lawyer - you're going to need it. Expect your insurance to triple, otherwise...
The fine will probably be $500, at a minimum, but a lawyer may get you off with just the fine, no points on your record. Deferred adjudication is an option, as well, or driving class...

I'd get a lawyer if you can afford it or you're really worried. Last July I got a reckless operation ticket. When I went to court for it I talked to the city prosecutor, got it dropped to a careless op + 8 hour defensive driving course + 12 hours community service + not on my record. If you have a lawyer present he can basically do the same thing for you and possibly get it reduced.
