Default I am buying a shotgun

After watching all this insanity in NO following the hurricane, I have decided that I am buying a shotgun. Never in a million years did I ever think these words would be coming out of my mouth, but after watching that crazy shit happen down there my opinion has swayed. I never want to be in a stiuation where someone comes to take my water and I cannot do a thing about. (probably will bever happen, but who really knows) Any suggestions?

Cheap and good? Mossberg 500 will do for ya. Can be had under 200 I believe (I have one) does well for a bargain shotgun.

Remington 870. Fairly inexpensive and you can do a ton of different upgrades to it if you desire.

Just one question - how do you plan to mount it in the back window of your S?

what exactly makes you think a shotgun is going to solve any problems? Far better to not be there than to stand there with a gun you don't know how to use, facing a situation where a gun won't fix things.

That said, a 12 gauge pump is the only kind you should look at, and the Mossberg 500 is a fine example. I'd go with a 24" barrel, and go skeet shooting at a local facility for fun and practice once in a while. You'll develop a little respect for the gun. Keep it clean, and consider it the last, last, last resort, not something to whip out whenever someone pisses you off or scares you. Holding a gun is the fastest way to get killed, not some kind of invulnerable armor some people seem to see it as. A gun is a target, not a shield.

I do not plan on buying this thing and not learning how to use it...And, I would only take it out as a last resort in somekind of dire situation.. I am not buying this thing to solve any problems, but only to have for the ONE time I MIGHT NEED IT..If that day ever comes

buy it and learn to use it for fun, like clay pigeons, or hunting. No reason to have a dangerous hunk of metal lying around for the rest of your life, signifying only fear and scary memory. A good hunting weapon can be a lethal defense weapon, but a hunting gun won't remind you of the dangerous world you live in, but of the world away from man. I don't understand people who go buy guns, then only shoot them at human-shaped targets, constantly mentioning how useful guns are against "intruders." I just refuse to live my life believing I need to shoot people in order to be "safe." I'd rather tramp around in the woods, hoping to get a lucky shot off and bring down a game animal, helping keep wildlife in balance now that we have driven off most predators. I'd rather die knowing I'd never killed another man. JMHO

A shot gun is a good choice of firearms. You don't have to be good to hit a target with something, and you can carry it across state lines - no permit required. - the look of a shot gun will scare the crap out of anyone - an ostenasious displacy is good deterent. Now as for the type (pump, over and under, double barrel) - I guess thats a matter of your experience and how comfortable you are. A good, pump action is nice, but if you have kids, you may want to get a break action type. Much easier to verify that its unloaded safely. Some states require that pumps be limited to 3 rounds so a double barrel isn't that much of a handicap, and it's scary as hell looking into a double 12.

If you are getting into survival gear - consider getting a small 22 cal. rifle. this isn't for self defence, this is for game and you can use it to become more proficient with a firearm (22 is cheap ammo - 12 gauge isn't) An AR-7 is a good pack rifle- with a good knife, axe, a couple of back packs with sleeping bags, MIR's and water purification bottles, you and your family can survive. Ok I've went way tooooooo far with my advice - just my 20 cents worth
