Buy something that serves dual purpose like others have said. We just got back from Yuma Az . We went on a dove hunt, in fact they are aging right now ,some are going into chili ,some are getting grilled. All hell breaks loose you can feed your family.
Now for the defense part, cracks me up when I read about people wanting a gun to defend themselves. Learn to fight first without having to rely on a gun, guns are a crutch that the weak use when they cannot fight. This coming from a old guy who has enough sidearms, shotguns, rifles, and big stuff to take on a small country. As someone who has been knifed and shot I can tell you it ain't as easy as you see on the movies. Learn to use your firearm in as many situations as you can .
What kind of a neighborhood do you live in that this is a concern ?

And you should know, I feel that a situation like in N.O. will probably never happen in my area, but once again you never know. And I will definitely learn to use a respect whatever I get.
Sidearm took down a bear!? What exactly did you use? They are notorious for shrugging off handgun rounds.
El Tianti, I'll call your .45 ACP and raise you a .357 or .44 Magnum. I grab a wheelgun when something on two feet absolutely positively has to go down. Everyone's got their own idea of enough. Put a 9 mm round in the right location and it'll beat several .45 rounds in the wrong locations.
The shotgun is still the best choice for home defense, operative word being defense (learn to hide in a room and wait for 911 responders). Though it is pretty hard to hide a shotgun behind your back when you answer a routine doorbell ringing...

I was actually discussing a similar idea with a friend of mine. He is, in his own words, "armed to the teeth" in preparation for a home invasion or worse. Anyway, we were talking about what the best weapon would be for home defense. I thought, "tactical shotgun" would be best, but he brought up a good point - the spray would really f' up my apartment. <-- probably the last thing on my mind, but an interesting point.
Anyway, he has a Glock 32 and a S&W .357 Magnum revolver. I guess either would work well enough to ward off an attacker. Opinions?
I don't own a gun, but I'd like to hear what you guys think. My baseball bat probably wouldn't get too far in NOLA right now.

Regarding the 9mm cartridge. The Great Pope John Paul II took six (SIX) 9mm rounds and survived.
Absent divine intervention, he would not have survived six .45 rounds.
