Remington 1187 is a nice choice. 5 shot, semi-auto. No pumping.

A shot gun is a good choice of firearms. You don't have to be good to hit a target with something, and you can carry it across state lines - no permit required. - the look of a shot gun will scare the crap out of anyone - an ostenasious displacy is good deterent. Now as for the type (pump, over and under, double barrel) - I guess thats a matter of your experience and how comfortable you are. A good, pump action is nice, but if you have kids, you may want to get a break action type. Much easier to verify that its unloaded safely. Some states require that pumps be limited to 3 rounds so a double barrel isn't that much of a handicap, and it's scary as hell looking into a double 12.

If you are getting into survival gear - consider getting a small 22 cal. rifle. this isn't for self defence, this is for game and you can use it to become more proficient with a firearm (22 is cheap ammo - 12 gauge isn't) An AR-7 is a good pack rifle- with a good knife, axe, a couple of back packs with sleeping bags, MIR's and water purification bottles, you and your family can survive. Ok I've went way tooooooo far with my advice - just my 20 cents worth
ar-7 is a fun little rifle. In addition to everything already stated, it will float when dissasembled in the stock (be pretty handy in the flood eh?)

I would recommend getting a gun that can handle 3" 12ga loads. Get some Brenneke KO 3" slugs. That will teach you to respect the power.

Also shoot it without ear plugs a few times.

A shotgun is a beast of a gun is used correctly.

But I am against the home defense purpose of a gun (too liberal), but I don't want to change the topic so if your going to get a gun put some big ass slugs through it and shoot it without ear plugs.
When your ears stop ringing and your shoulder stops hurting you will come to espect the gun.

If you're new to firearms take a training class first.

My 870 has been perfect. Even works fine for skeet shooting. You get some funny looks from some of the o/u and semi guys but you'll learn to pump after each shot!

Don't use slugs unless you're hunting bears. And for home defense you don't need a magnum load. You'll just hurt your shoulder and endanger neighbors.

Yeah, do that if you want to go deaf. I shot my 16" AR-15 carbine indoors without hearing protection ONCE and I couldn't hear right for several days. I still get occasional ringing. It's not like the movies..

Dont use a shot gun if your hunting bears. Use a rifle.

As for no ear plugs, I don't mean he should shoot alot without earplugs but a few times (3 at most) will give him more respect for the gun. Its like the difference between a firecracker (movie guns) and an M-80 (shotgun in real life).

What I mean is that its devastating. The air moves, theres this huge bang, with fire, and destruction.

I remember the first time I shot at a deer (first time I shot a 3" slug without earplugs). I dropped that sucker from 60 yards (shameless plug) but the only thing I could think about was how powerfull the gun really was. When the ringing stopped (5 mins later) I had a new respect for the magnitude of a gun.

Skeet shooting is fun but shot loads don't really demonstrat the power of a gun like a slug does (3" or 2 3/4")

As for an 870, thats what I have. That and a Browning Auto 5.

I have used pumps since I was young, 15 years ago, and I have learned to be great with them.

My father laughs when I put 4 shells in my 870 when we hunt, saying "You'll never get 4 shots off" Well the one time a deer comes near us I happend to have 5 in the gun and got all 5 off within 10 seconds. Hitting said deer 4 times.

Buy something that serves dual purpose like others have said. We just got back from Yuma Az . We went on a dove hunt, in fact they are aging right now ,some are going into chili ,some are getting grilled. All hell breaks loose you can feed your family.

Now for the defense part, cracks me up when I read about people wanting a gun to defend themselves. Learn to fight first without having to rely on a gun, guns are a crutch that the weak use when they cannot fight. This coming from a old guy who has enough sidearms, shotguns, rifles, and big stuff to take on a small country. As someone who has been knifed and shot I can tell you it ain't as easy as you see on the movies. Learn to use your firearm in as many situations as you can .

What kind of a neighborhood do you live in that this is a concern ?
