Huh? That is a bit oversimplistic don't you think?

Reality is in India you generally get a well educated person for a lot less money. In the states you double that money and you get some high school dropout with an attitude and drinking problem.

However, taking your vote with your wallet bit as bait -- exactly where would one buy a laptop that was built in the U.S. with all U.S. parts?
Not really. In my profession, jobs are being outsourced overseas everyday. This has fukt out my sector like a mofo. I know many people out of work, they don't have drinking probelms, and they aren't lazy. They are intelligent, and work hard.

I hear you about the parts, but where does it end? First it was the parts, next was support, now operations are going over there. It has to stop someplace.

And my experience with Dell, was much the same. I got someone who couldn't understand jack, and I had to have them repeat almost everything to understand their broken English. I returned the product I bought from them, and bought it locally instead. I won't buy anything from them in the future. I have a Toshiba Laptop that I use for my own business. I've had to get a couple of things taken care of, and happily, my support person spoke great English, and as a bonus worked within our borders.

And I have a friend, that just moved here from Europe (he is from the UK), and he says the women are starting to get just as bad over there as they are here

Your average American is an uneducated, poorly traveled egocentric dolt. I live here (part time only) because unlike any other country on earth (that I have found) there is a large concentration of stupid people willing to pay me great money because your average American is (see afformentioned comments) -- and lazy.
Dude, I hope you don't really mean this... Traveling doesn't necessarily do anything for you. I've been to several other countries, and they just made me realize how much I appreciate the place I live. Companies have the freedom to outsource if they choose to do so, but I don't think it's right. Outsourcing puts money in the pockets of people who already have a lot of money. It has also probably driven the price of PCs down, but I'm willing to pay a little more for some American customer service. I loved your use of the word "dolt". It makes you sound "educated".

the first time i called i was on hold for about 5 minutes when it rang someone just hung up on me........which happens here in america a fair amount too..... so maybe the people in India are just trying to make me feel at home?

Second call.......the "hold" time was the usual 3-4 minutes before I could speak to MARTA.... i was just pissed that she spoke such horrible english (although I cannot speak indian.....but I am not trying to either) and I just kept repeating myself, but getting slower and louder as i went.

Hopefully i won't need to call them back for anything.

My Mom took six months to get her Dell machine sorted out. Guess what - all the support personnel were in India as well. Doh! It was a nightmare - clueless people (that's usually anywhere, not just India) but more importantly, she couldn't understand them and they couldn't understand her. Talk about pointless. I don't believe she'll ever buy a Dell again (and she let them know it).

My problem isn't with outsourcing in general, it's with outsourcing to people I CAN'T UNDERSTAND. Even if the support people know their stuff, if they can't get it across to me (or understand me, either), it's a moot point.

Last time I called I got an American. I was buying a videocard 200 dollars off retail and couldn't turn that deal down.

What I didn't like however are the chat rooms they want you to go to. The wait time for that is longer than I expected. Maybe others have had better luck.

In Aus, i was watching an program which spent 25mins talking about how easy customers personal information is sold from them call centres in India.
They had people go undercover filming the deals and that.

If they start to ask for more personal information e.g passport id, then cancel with them.

Some random thoughts.

People want it all; low cost, customer service, quality product, shareholder value.

We live in a global economy and Dell's model, as well as quite a few others, is to off-shore or out-source. India, Philippines, Eastern Europe are the frontiers of inexpensive and educated labor. Wait until mainland China cycles through a class of english speaking students. It is coming.

Verizon runs a call center in central Maryland. A union shop. High starting rate, regular increases, current and retirement benefits, etc. etc. Nothing wrong with that but it puts them at a competitive disadvantage. People complain about Verizon's monthly charges, service level, stock price. One way to combat that is off-shore at pennies on the dollar.

I work for a large financial service company. I am personally selecting staff, as I type, to lay-off in 2006 and send the jobs to India. The expense arbitrage is 6 or 7 to 1. It is the way we compete.

If people were not greedy, we could keep everything in the US. But, back to my first point, we want it all; low cost, high quality products with excellent service and high return on investment. It is not possible.

Read my experience with Bellsouth's India cell center - https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=311949

I hate it when companies offshore jobs. I hate it even more when they offshore jobs to non-English speaking, third world countries like India. Highly educated or not, I much rather speak to an American high school dropout than an India with a Masters Degree. BTW what the hell is someone with a Masters Degree working as a customer service rep in a call center for? I hate it even worse when they offshore jobs to India, and you get "John" whose real name is Abu, trying to help you with whatever the issue is and you cannot understand or communicate with him. You would think with all that education and superior intelligence, they could at least be able to form a sentence in English.
