This is a very interesting thread. I'm married to an Indian woman and have traveled back there seven times over the past 16 years.

You wouldn't believe the transformation. India is fast becoming a world economic power, and outsourcing is transforming the society at blinding speed - at least in the urban areas I've seen.

Is this a good thing? It is for them. My bro-in-law lives in Singapore, where he's a network troubleshooter working for a Swiss bank. He's a brilliant guy who speaks perfect English. He's a winner, and you'd love to deal with him on the phone.

I've had bad call center experiences myself, and found myself fuming at the communications difficulties. But RUGBY has hit the nail on the head. We in the States want it all, and the world economy is now borderless. The playing field is leveling.

I have no answers, but we're all world citizens now, whether we like it or not.

Read my experience with Bellsouth's India cell center
Said it before in your earlier thread, you talked with someone in Atlanta or Nashville, not India.

Your a dick.
You're. See earlier comment regarding education.

Granted, I don't call callcenters much -- and most of my calls are addressed by the IVR system -- but I think there is a bit of exaggeration and drama being written into some of these claims.

You know exactly what I meant.

But here it is in proper grammar.

You're a dick.

Some random thoughts.

People want it all; low cost, customer service, quality product, shareholder value.

We live in a global economy and Dell's model, as well as quite a few others, is to off-shore or out-source. India, Philippines, Eastern Europe are the frontiers of inexpensive and educated labor. Wait until mainland China cycles through a class of english speaking students. It is coming.

Verizon runs a call center in central Maryland. A union shop. High starting rate, regular increases, current and retirement benefits, etc. etc. Nothing wrong with that but it puts them at a competitive disadvantage. People complain about Verizon's monthly charges, service level, stock price. One way to combat that is off-shore at pennies on the dollar.

I work for a large financial service company. I am personally selecting staff, as I type, to lay-off in 2006 and send the jobs to India. The expense arbitrage is 6 or 7 to 1. It is the way we compete.

If people were not greedy, we could keep everything in the US. But, back to my first point, we want it all; low cost, high quality products with excellent service and high return on investment. It is not possible.
Good post!

In essence, we Americans are voting with our wallets. The average consumer places a great of value on low cost products and services. Unfortunately, in today's global economy, this allows very little room for businesses to remain competitive and profitable (read: businesses are not in the business of charity).

Welcome to capitalism!

"Like it or not, people judge you by the words you use. "
-some half-baked ad for "Verbal Advantage" on the radio

Also, we judge you by your inability to use and/or differentiate between a colon, semi-coloi, and a period.

Thank you! Come again!

When was the last time you dealt with a call center person in the U.S. who was any better? Reality check. Most of those folks are uneducated losers who generally last < 2 months at the job. How well do you think they are trained?

Who said they walk on water? I simply pointed out that most have a better and more complete education. Third world? I guess by most definitions -- but it is a beautiful country full of well educated and kind people. Not a bad place to live really. Have you ever travelled outside of the U.S.?

No they are playing to the Average uneducated never been outside of America American who could never pronounce their real names in the first place.

Your average American is an uneducated, poorly traveled egocentric dolt. I live here (part time only) because unlike any other country on earth (that I have found) there is a large concentration of stupid people willing to pay me great money because your average American is (see afformentioned comments) -- and lazy.

Not sure what your last comment had to do with anything -- but you asked.
Agreed 99%. -1% since India is NOT a third world country.

I guess you should have figured out I meant 2 x 3 = 6 or 2 + 3 = 5....

Too lazy to get something so simple correct the first time around? You're illustrating steve's opinion about stupid lazy Americans quite nicely.

"OMG ITS A FORUM ON TEH INTARWEB"

"WHO REALLY CAREZ BOUT SPELING AND GRAMMER"

Steve, I would venture to guess that the average American is probably more educated than the average person elsewhere. I don't have numbers to back any of it up, but I would think that more Americans have access and use that access to education than many people in other countries. Sure, China's got tons of smart people. They've also got a billion people out in the middle of nowhere. Now, if you filter out all the people that don't have access to formalized education then by all means Americans probably slide way way down the scale. For such a large population that goes to school to learn, some Americans really surprise me being as dumb as they are. I'm not brilliant. Not anywhere close. Which puts a lot of people I've met even further from some sort of recognizable intelligence. It'd be interesting to study how different cultures and their lifestyles affect learning. Admittedly, I've only seen China and Taiwan when I was young. Learning wasn't something I really thought about as a 9 year old kid.
Take your sorry butt to FC forums, you would fit right in there along with Steve.

I don't know what entitles people like you to reside in the U.S. You don't contribute anything useful. You're kind of like Paris Hilton, nothing more than a waste of oxygen.
