Buying the car yourself once your over 18 is not relevant to this topic. Not trying to flame but trying to stay on topic here.

Oh, to add. My Porsche when I was 16 was not my first car. I had had as my first car a Silver on red 1980 honda civic station wagon, then I was given a 1986 civic and then as I said, so I would not feel left out at that school the 944. I had not had an accident in the other 2 cars.

I do agree though that the first car should be a safe not fast one because you are almost guarenteed to get in an accident. I plan on buying a slower safer car for my kids at 16 and then a nicer car when they go off to college.

My Dad bought it for me because I have always loved exotic cars (to a 16 year old a Porsche is pretty exotic). He wanted me to go to a private high school and I resisted because of how snobby that school was, so the car was bought to make me happy.
omg i pissed my pants when i read that...

My first car was also a 1986 Porsche 944. I bought it with my money and a little help from my parents. Then as a High School Graduation present they bough a G35 coupe for me. I enjoy that car and in two years I have not crashed it (knock on wood). I know my limits and I never do anything stupid on the street.

but see, that sets you apart from the other 98% of HS students that are reckless and will do anythign to "look cool" or impress others. Hell some of us older guys haven't even grown out of that.

Yet another one entirely consumed with image and how you can relate food to a car is entirely beyond me.

So are Accords, Camrys, Corollas, Civics all POS?
If I was consumed with "image" I sure wouldn't be driving around in a Honda . I drive the S because in SoCal I can drive top down all year and if you are running errands at least enjoy the day . What's your point? Compared to most sportscars all those cars you mentioned are POS.

You forgot the powerfull engine that allows quick acceleration and speeds and higher likelyhood of loosing control.
True but after racing for 11 years and 13 years for the younger boy they will own shifter karts much faster than any street car ,like I said before second nature. Not like parents who cram 6 months of "driver training " before they let them loose on the street.

you are exactly proving his point.....this dad can train and teach his kids all he wants but you just watch, he buys his son a corvette or something and the kid is gonna get into a crash 100%....and just like you said..."he had no control over what happened". So your son may be the best driver but if you are teaching him how to drive performance oriented you know he's goiing to go out to the public roads and show off to his friends when you ar ento there and what if a deer runs into the road that your son is traveling down at 80mph and he crashes? think man think

so do your kid a favor and dont buy him a sports car...if you want to show everybody how wealthy and what a great parent you are why dont you buy your kid a luxury car? maybe it will be someone you know who's life you will be saving.
Have you ever tracked a car in anger ? Do you know how lame street driving is compared to the track ? Once you race frequently street driving is very boring. First you drive so much slower than the track , cops are a PITA , minivans and SUV's are everywhere (mobile chicanes).

The sad part is everybody compares the size of their wallet to their own what is a treat for some is nothing to others. Your point of giving my child a luxury car , why? Like I said in my first post people drive big cars because they have no skills so when they crash they hope the big car will let them live.

But to each their own , we all have to make our own choices.

How many of the parents who read these post have gone the crap car route with their kids. Once again lousy brakes ,suspensions, sloppy steering and send their loved ones on their way? How many people give their wives a minivan or SUV and leave it stock with crappy brakes, piss poor suspensions, no proper drivers training and stick their kids in with them? I guess have a video screen to "keep them busy" is more important than items needed to avoid a crash.
