Your lucky no one was walking along the road and got creamed by you swerving to avoid a dog uncontrollably. You should always maintain control of your car in any situation. Saying you just gave up control of the car and threw it any direction other than the dogs shows a lack of judgment on your part. All those who are so concerned about the dogs life should think about the other lives that could be lost by a driver swerving uncontrollably to avoid an animal. Invest in a good defensive driving course, it helps hone your skills for situations such as this.

well their was nobody on the street and the road was clear no other cars. imo i made the right choice. i felt allot better not hitting the dog, even though i took some damage.

hahah dont feel too bad, I totaled my gti that way! i swerved to avoid a dog and hit a bunch of gravel, and my car went head on into a tree at 40mph. I have to commend those little vw's though, they are built like tanks. I walked out without a bump or bruise.

I love animals but I never swerve uncontrollably to miss them, if its a situation where I can dodge them I definately try, but if I'm at 55 mph or etc. I'm not jerking my car to avoid one and put myself in harms way, thats when you just hit the brakes and pray the animal moves or you slow down in time. Swerving out of control is always the worse of the 2 decisions when it comes down to the odds of your own safety.

if i see a dog get in front of me, i am not swerving to miss him. lets say those weren't trees you hit, and they were people, be a whole different story. you miss a dog and injure/kill 3 people, sux, but you really can't do anything about it.

I love dogs but...they are really *dumb* sometimes. Glad you are OK, hopefully your insurance will cover the damage

Why can't people just keep their dogs in the backyard or on a leash if they love them so much?

I would of hit the dog. Sorry to sound so cruel but I agree with what some others are saying. If you had time to see there was no one around that you could have hit by swerving, don't you think you had enough time to no hit the trees?

I have dogs, and if my dog ran out in the road because I couldn't keep track of it, and someone swerved to miss it and died in the process, I'd feel pretty bad.

I'm glad everything worked out so no person was injured or the dog, I'm just stating what could have happened and how it could be a lot worse.
