How much is the penalty to get out of your lease early?

I don't mean that what I said is the "Save all solution" I just thought it might help. You probably know me well enough to know that I don't get F'd with much on the street...unless Joe's around So, I thought I'd give you a little advice that might help. Believe me, I'd be just as worried as you, but you can't show that to them.

My first choice would be to get the hell out of there. What's it going to cost you to stay there? Maybe money, maybe injury, maybe death? svtmach1 does have a good point. You can show no fear, they can sense it or smell it or something. When I was in my early 20's I moved into a very large apartment complex where very few people paid more than $10 to $20 in rent if at all. While it wasn't built by the government it was the projects. I had guns, knives, and even a speargun pulled on me. The one time my Mom came to visit there was a murder two doors down. The girl who lived directly across from me was a hooker who brought many of her Johns home for sex, especially those who liked to have people watch. I saw more crazy shit than I care to remember. Because I showed no fear and was still nice to people I earned a reputation and only the new people f'ed with me. The people who lived there watched out for me for the most part. The last month I lived there I knew 3 people who were murdered and I knew all 7 of the people who were arrested for the killings. About 18 months after moving away my wife and I went back to visit and as we drove in and looked at where we had been living it made us sick to out stomachs, we both almost puked. Yeah, I can feel for the people in the ghetto, but I never want to put my life at risk living there again.

1. MOVE OUT AT ALL COSTS

2. Consider buying a tazer

3. try not to make eye contact with lowlifes and never talk back. It's better in this case to swallow pride instead of blood.

4. consider getting kodokan seat locks and a removable stereo. Leave your car unlocked with the alarm on. If a crook wants to get into your car they will. If you keep them from damaging it then you won't have to pay high insurance to replace ripped tops.

5. MOVE OUT AT ALL COSTS

6. See if you can leave the s at home with your folks and drive a beater until you get out of this place.

Your story reminds me of a piece of advice I have for all people looking at rental housing. After the landlord shows it to you go back and ask the current tennant and or neighbors about the place and the neighborhood.

When I was in college myself and my friends went to look at a seven bedroom house for rent, it was HUGE, cheap and really a neat old house. It was perfect for us and rent would have been soooooo low. We went back later and asked the current tennants why they were leaving, if they were graduating, whatever. They said people were watching the house.

With seven people living there, there was almost always someone home. They told us that the three instances where the last person left the house, it was immediately broken into. On a fourth occasion, the seventh roomate left but one of the housemates had a friend from out of town staying with them and he slept in with a hangover. He opened his eyes to see to surprised burglars looing at him from the hallway and they bolted out of the door they had kicked in. Whomever was breaking in lived close by and was keeping close tabs on the house, but they could not figure out who it was since it was next to a 20 unit apartment.

If you move out before your lease contract is up, the only thing you should expect to lose is your damage deposit. Damage deposits are 1/2 a month of rent, divides by 5 guys = fvck all! It has already cost you much more than that in stolen/vandalized property, plus the fact that you don't feel safe to leave your house.
Move out of that house as soon as damn-well possible!

There is an old saying that you should take heed of:
"It is better to live in the Worst house in the Best neighborhood, rather than the Best house in the Worst neighborhood"

I know you don't want to hear it, but I would just move out. Pay the early termination penalty and move elsewhere. I think a 30 minute commute would be worth it if it means losing all of this ghetto-ness.

You should buy a rusted up Fiero, then do a DIY replica of an F355 (I'm sure even a really cheap immitation would fake them out), park it across the street from your house, set few land-mines around it then goto class
