The basic rule of gun use is never pull it unless you're planning to shoot and never shoot unless you're planning to kill.
Brian,
I completely relate to what you're going through. If you feel as if your personal safety is in danger, then by all means move.
But if not, I say you stay. As for the verbal threats and remarks, ignore them and don't show anyone in public they bother you. If you do, you will continually get marked as someone easy to be punked. Don't let anyone "own" your emotional responses in that type of neighborhood....that means, don't cower and don't get aggressive.
Carry only as much as you need on you at any given point. If you only are walking outside to go get lunch/dinner, take only $10 with you. Keep jewelry and personal possessions off your body.
Don't carry a weapon. If you think your personal safety may ever be in danger IN your house, get yourself a gun, some lessons on how to use it, and some range time.
Ultimately, make friends with people in the neighborhood, worth making friend with. Those are the same people that are the older brothers, sisters, mothers, aunts, uncles, fathers, etc. of the people that may victimize you. If you're cool with someone the "hoods" respect, you'll be left alone.
Hell, make nice with the hoods when you get a chance. Don't invite them over or anything, but on the street give them a "what's up nod".
Contrary to what is written in previous post, you aren't seen as a "white devil" for the people in the neighborhood. You are seen as an outsider that is only their temporarily. There's some level of offense taken by the "commoners" that your only there using "their space" to get your education and then move away.
You are the priviledged one able to go to college, have a nice car, own a grill, etc. There's more jealousy there than racism.
How do I know this, I went through the same damn thing in college. I decided that I would rent a whole house to myself in a bad neighborhood....to find out it was one of Milwaukee's worst neighborhoods. I was threatened numerous times, I was mugged once, and my house wsa robbed when I went home to visit the parents one weekend.
Over a period of time I became one of the commoners...those that didn't know me, feared me. Why? Because that damn Indian MUST be crazy if he lives in this neighborhood. This was one of the best experiences in my life.
I truly got to see and experience how others live in this world. I may not agree with lifestyles or attitudes, but I can see where a group of people's mentality comes from.
Running away scared is one thing, running away due to bad perceptions is another. If you don't feel as if your personal safety is truely in danger, I say stay. Mind you, there's a difference from people wanting to "punk" you and people wanting to actually hurt or steal from you.

Pepper spray is your friend. It's the easiests way to fend someone off without having to worry about going to jail for hurting them. I highly recommend picking some up. Keep it on your person at all times and in crucial places in your house.
If you decide to get a gun and eventually have to shoot someone, make sure they are facing you when you shoot them, and always shoot to kill. Then plant a screwdriver or knife in their hand. Make sure you tell the cops you were "in fear for your life".
If I were you I'd get the pepper spray instead of a gun.
